PenFed Credit Union Reports Impressive Loan Growth and Strengthened Financial Position Amid Economic Challenges

In a recent announcement from Tysons, Virginia, PenFed Credit Union, recognized as one of the largest federal credit unions in the United States, has showcased impressive financial performance for the third quarter of 2026. The institution proudly reported $8.8 billion in loan originations for the year-to-date, marking a notable 22% increase compared to the previous year. The organization credits its ongoing success to a member-focused strategy, which emphasizes competitive interest rates, reliable service, and digital convenience.

The surge in loan originations encompasses various categories, but significant growth was observed in mortgage products, with home loan originations increasing by an astonishing 65% year-over-year. Non-maturity deposits also grew impressively, reaching $15.9 billion, an increase from 58% to 65% of total deposits compared to last year. This growth is indicative of deeper relationships being forged with members, enhancing both customer loyalty and institutional stability.

James Schenck, President and CEO of PenFed, noted the resilience of the economy during the third quarter despite the ongoing challenges faced by families and businesses, especially given that inflation rates surpassed 3% amidst rising energy costs. A critical move was taken by the Federal Reserve, which increased its benchmark interest rate for the first time in three years in September, aiming to tackle inflation even though it brought along higher borrowing costs for consumers.

“During these challenging times, having access to competitive financial products and a trustworthy partner is essential for consumers,” Schenck stated. He expressed pride in the performance achieved during the quarter, which underscored PenFed’s dedication to its 2.7 million members. The innovative financial services offered by PenFed allowed members to enjoy favorable terms, enabling them to manage their borrowing effectively amidst changes in the economic landscape.

PenFed Home has exhibited exceptional performance in the mortgage, home equity, and real estate sectors through Q3 2026, successfully navigating a tough housing market. Its Very Important Buyer (VIB) program has provided members with access to realty agents and mortgage specialists, in addition to financial incentives aimed at simplifying the home buying process.

In the consumer banking sector, PenFed has seen remarkable momentum while adhering to cautious credit policies. The year-to-date figures revealed over $2 billion in auto loan originations alone, showcasing a 45% increase. The demand for personal loans also remains robust, with nearly $375 million dispensed, coupled with an impressive 67% rise in the opening of new credit cards, totaling over 20,000 accounts.

Financially, the credit union’s discipline has yielded a year-to-date net income of $177 million, which represents a 58% increase compared to the previous year. This net income surge has elevated the return on assets to 0.80%, reflecting continued operational success.

With a net worth ratio rising to 10.84%, PenFed underscores its financial strength, proactively managing its capital and liquidity to support member growth effectively. Non-maturity deposits have shown a robust annual increase of 9%, further solidifying long-term relationships with members. The credit quality within the institution has also shown signs of improvement, with the loan loss rate decreasing to 1.15%, demonstrating effective portfolio management.

PenFed has consistently prioritized member experience, achieving high satisfaction scores among support staff both online and in local branches. Its IT teams continue to enhance mobile and web services, processing over eight million member interactions monthly, thereby streamlining the banking experience.

Furthermore, PenFed is making strides in community involvement, allocating over $1 million this year to various initiatives focused on financial well-being, education, and military support. In alignment with this mission, the PenFed Foundation has successfully raised more than $1.2 million at its recent Military Heroes Golf Classic, aiding veterans’ transitions into civilian life.

Established in 1935, PenFed Credit Union is committed to advancing the financial interests of its members and continues to innovate in the banking space with a variety of products including mortgages, personal loans, and credit cards designed with members’ needs in mind.
