Honoring the Lessons of the Great Hanshin Earthquake with NINZIA's Disaster Prevention Curry Event
As Japan approaches the 30th anniversary of the devastating Great Hanshin Earthquake, Ritsumeikan University's Disaster Management Research Institute is hosting a significant event titled "Lessons from the Hanshin Earthquake to the World". Scheduled for June 22, 2026, at the university's downtown campus, the event aims to reflect on the teachings of this catastrophic event and share insights with both domestic and international audiences.
The event is in collaboration with key partners including Yomiuri Shimbun's Osaka Headquarters and JICA Kansai, with various programs designed to educate attendees about disaster preparedness and response based on the lessons learned over the past three decades. Among these initiatives is a unique offering from NINZIA, a local company known for its innovative approach to disaster management food products. NINZIA will serve thirty servings of its "NINZIA BOSAI" disaster prevention curry during the event.
The offering of the disaster prevention curry is specifically designed to foster discussions about preparedness while allowing participants to enjoy a meal together. NINZIA's CEO and CRO, Masahiro Yoriyama, who is a graduate of Ritsumeikan University, will also take part in the event, sharing insights about the company's initiatives in developing disaster prevention foods. This includes the philosophy of making emergency food not just items for crisis situations but delicious, enjoyable meals that can be part of daily life.
A Focus on Learning and Sharing
From June 9 to 24, a panel exhibition will also feature international students who will share their findings and knowledge about the Hanshin Earthquake and disaster prevention. This segment highlights the collaborative spirit of the event, emphasizing the importance of learning from past experiences and the role that future generations can play in enhancing disaster resilience.
The June 22 program will include a talk event and networking opportunities for international students, Yomiuri Shimbun representatives, and members of Ritsumeikan University's Disaster Management Research Institute. This blend of perspectives aims to create a richer understanding of disaster prevention strategies and promote cultural exchange.
What is "NINZIA BOSAI"?
NINZIA’s disaster prevention curry falls under the category of "active rolling stock" food. This initiative promotes the idea that emergency supplies should also be part of everyday meals, encouraging a culture where disaster preparedness is integrated into daily routines. By creating products that can easily be included in regular diets, NINZIA aims to make disaster preparedness a shining aspect of everyday life rather than a mere afterthought.
The company's innovative approach leverages traditional Japanese plant-based ingredients like konjac and employs a technique known as texture engineering. This technology focuses on enhancing the taste and mouthfeel of food without relying on excessive sugars, fats, or animal products. By connecting everyday eating habits with disaster readiness, NINZIA is paving the way for a more proactive approach to preparedness.
