Discovering the Wonders of Seaweed in Kofu City
On July 29th, 2026, from 10:30 AM to 1:30 PM, a special event will take place in Kofu City, aimed at celebrating the culinary delights of nori (seaweed). Organized by the Pal System Yamanashi Nagano and featuring Miegiyoren Hanbai Co., a leading seaweed processing company from Ise City, this gathering promises to be both educational and delicious.
The Journey from Sea to Table
Nori holds a significant place in Japanese cuisine as a versatile ingredient enjoyed with various dishes. Miegiyoren Hanbai will provide insights into the journey of nori from its harvest to its processing, shedding light on its nutritional value and culinary appeal. Participants will have the unique opportunity to taste different grades of nori, experiencing the deep flavors and fragrant aromas that characterize this beloved ingredient.
This hands-on session features not only tasting but also a chance to get involved in the cooking process. Attendees will learn how to prepare two types of sushi rolls: one filled with pork and vegetables, and another combining fish sausage with cheese. Additionally, they will create onigiri sandwiches with tuna mayonnaise and cucumber, crafting a well-balanced lunch that is simple yet rich in flavors.
The event will be supported by the Ichinomiya Center Supporters, a group of enthusiastic volunteers who organize activities at the area's distribution center. Alongside the main dishes, special miso soup and dessert will be prepared by the supporters, showcasing how nori can elevate more than just rice dishes.

Promoting Local Rice Consumption
This culinary event is part of the “Onigiri Good” initiative, launched by the Pal System Group in April 2026. The initiative aims to promote rice consumption in Japan and improve the national food self-sufficiency rate. Participants’ engagements in onigiri-related events and social media contributions will count towards a goal of 10,000 actions, resulting in a donation of one ton of direct farm rice to children's cafeterias in 12 prefectures.
Through this event, attendees will savor the joy of homemade sushi and onigiri, connecting over delicious food while supporting the promotion of local rice and contributing to social welfare.
Looking Ahead
