Chesapeake Bay Outward Bound School Marks 40 Years of Youth Empowerment and Outdoor Learning

Chesapeake Bay Outward Bound School Celebrates 40 Years of Impact

The Chesapeake Bay Outward Bound School (CBOBS) is proudly commemorating four decades of pioneering outdoor education. Established in 1986, this nonprofit organization has transformed the lives of over 100,000 students through immersive learning experiences that promote character, resilience, and leadership. Their hands-on approach has taken students beyond traditional classrooms, enabling them to learn through challenging outdoor activities.

A Legacy of Transformation

CBOBS has built a remarkable legacy over the past 40 years, centered around experiential learning. Participants have engaged in a range of activities, from canoeing and hiking to ropes courses, that focus on developing essential life skills such as self-awareness, confidence, empathy, and navigating life's challenges. As highlighted by Kristen Komlosy, Executive Director of CBOBS, the organization believes that when youth are provided with opportunities for growth, their futures expand significantly. One recent participant, Josh, articulated his experience, stating that without Outward Bound, he may not have found the courage to express his voice.

Strategic Growth and Community Engagement

In 2026, CBOBS is also excited to announce the completion of a new campus in Washington, D.C., at the Town Hall Education Arts Recreation Campus (THEARC). This development marks an essential step in expanding access to their educational programming and is complemented by state-of-the-art climbing elements. This project was made possible through a generous investment of $2 million from the A. James and Alice B. Clark Foundation, showcasing the importance of community support in achieving educational goals.

The strategic partnership with THEARC not only enriches the programming offered by CBOBS but also integrates the organization within a vibrant hub focused on education, health, and arts initiatives. By embedding their activities in such collaborative spaces, CBOBS enhances its mission to inspire and support young people in navigating their paths to success.

A Vision for the Future

Looking ahead, CBOBS has set an ambitious goal: to serve 10,000 students annually by 2030. Achieving this goal will involve a multifaceted approach that includes increased community engagement, hiring more staff and instructors, and expanding facilities—particularly with the new D.C. campus. Additionally, the organization is committed to ensuring that financial barriers do not hinder youth participation through increased scholarship access.

CBOBS's long-term vision reflects their dedication not only to expanding their reach but also to continuing the impactful work that has defined their first 40 years. By fostering essential life skills and personal development through outdoor experiences, they are paving the way for a brighter future for all students in the Chesapeake Bay region.
