Women in HVACR Achieves Milestone with Historic Donation for Scholarships

In a groundbreaking achievement for Women in HVACR (WHVACR), a nonprofit dedicated to empowering women in the heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration sectors, the organization has announced a substantial donation of $100,000 from Synchrony Bank. This generous donation was revealed during the Women in HVACR Conference held in October 2024, bringing the total contributions to the endowment fund to an impressive $150,000 this year. Underlining their commitment, the endowment aims to reach a goal of $1 million, which will facilitate six scholarships for women pursuing careers in the HVACR industry for years to come.

The need for such support was articulated by Lori Tschohl, the president of WHVACR, who expressed that the soaring costs of education can be a barrier for many aspiring professionals. "The scholarship fund embodies the essence of what Women in HVACR stands for," she explained. "Synchrony Bank's contribution, in addition to other donations, brings us closer to our vision. The HVACR industry is immensely rewarding, and this support lays the groundwork for our community’s future leaders by providing the essential education and resources they need to thrive."

Founded in 2022 by Ruth King, WHVACR's endowment fund collected initial donations of $122,000 in its first year and $65,000 in 2023. Curtis Howse, from Synchrony, highlighted the importance of investing in scholarships for women in HVACR trades, emphasizing that this not only supports individual growth, but also fortifies the entire industry by promoting diversity and expanding access to education.

The organization accepts scholarship applications until June 1 each year, with recipients announced in September. This structure allows WHVACR to continuously support and recognize women committed to shaping the future of the HVACR landscape.

With roughly 1,200 active members, WHVACR hosts various events each year to strengthen community ties and support women in pursuing careers ranging from engineering to management in HVACR.

As the organization continues its inspiring journey, the contributions of supporters enable WHVACR to make a lasting impact in nurturing talent and providing educational resources. With ongoing aims to increase the number of women in HVACR, this recent donation is a significant milestone that not only impacts individuals, but also serves to enhance the overall industry.
