Marymount Education Foundation Invests $5.57 Million in LMU for Scholarships
Loyola Marymount University recently made an exciting announcement regarding a substantial donation from the Marymount Education Foundation (MEF). This transformative $5.57 million gift represents a significant investment in the future of local high school students, specifically those from Catholic schools, by establishing the Marymount Scholars Program. This initiative aims to create a seamless path to higher education while addressing the socioeconomic barriers some students face.
The Marymount Scholars Program, developed in collaboration among the LMU, MEF, and the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, is designed to provide comprehensive financial support and resources to those students who may find it challenging to pursue a four-year college degree. According to LMU President Thomas Poon, the commitment from MEF exemplifies how organizations sharing common values can coalesce to enhance educational access. He stated, "This program will transform the lives of more than 70 ambitious and talented Catholic high school students considering LMU as their college home."
Archbishop José H. Gomez echoed Poon's sentiments, expressing delight over this partnership that enables Catholic education to be more accessible. He emphasized the collaborative effort's potential to uplift young individuals within the archdiocese, further strengthening the bond between LMU and local Catholic institutions.
The funding derived from this gift will support up to 18 new students each academic year within the LMU Catholic High School Promise Program, which was launched in 2025. This initiative aims to foster academic collaboration between LMU and six participating high schools: Bishop Conaty–Our Lady of Loretto, Bishop Mora Salesian, Cantwell–Sacred Heart of Mary, Junípero Serra, St. Bernard College Prep, and St. Pius X–St. Matthias Academy.
This year marks a significant milestone as the Promise Program welcomed its inaugural class, comprised of students who joined LMU for the academic year 2026-27. The introduction of the Marymount Scholars Program signifies the biggest contribution made to date for the Promise Program, making it a critical component in expanding higher education access in Los Angeles.
Beyond financial aid, the Marymount Scholars Program offers networking, mentorship, and resources that foster a supportive environment for students throughout their academic journey. Participants will benefit from faculty mentorship, opportunities for professional development, and stipends for study abroad initiatives, technology, and educational materials. Each student will be paired with a mentor from the foundation to provide one-on-one support—ensuring they thrive academically and can navigate their college experience successfully.
Chibby Obi, an LMU first-year student and participant in the Promise Program, shared his enthusiasm for the opportunity that has been provided. Growing up in Los Angeles and attending St. Bernard College Prep, he expressed how LMU's Catholic values attracted him to the university since middle school. The program’s ongoing support has solidified his excitement about his college journey, highlighting the tangible impact of these initiatives.
For LMU, the establishment of the Marymount Scholars Program acts as a beacon in its mission to educate individuals through the principles of faith and justice. By investing in students from diverse backgrounds, LMU not only diversifies its student body but also strengthens the community. This commitment ensures that future leaders will foster positive change and make a significant impact in their respective communities.
In summary, the Marymount Education Foundation's donation marks a pivotal moment for local students aiming for higher education. By creating opportunities through the Marymount Scholars Program, they are helping change lives, affirming the importance of accessible education, and investing in the future of many young individuals eager to learn and lead. As LMU continues to champion these efforts, it remains dedicated to nurturing the next generation of scholars and leaders equipped to navigate the complexities of an evolving society.
