Piramal Pharma Transitions to Biomass Briquettes, Boosting Sustainability Efforts
Piramal Pharma Limited's Bold Move to Biomass
Piramal Pharma Limited, a prominent player in the pharmaceutical industry, has made a significant environmental leap by converting its coal-fired steam generator in the Digwal plant to operate on biomass briquettes. This initiative represents a step forward in the company's commitment to sustainability and aligns with global climate action frameworks.
The transition to biomass is expected to eliminate approximately 24,000 tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) emissions annually, which accounts for about 17% of the company's total emissions. This major step is part of Piramal's ambitious goal of reducing its greenhouse gas emissions (Scope 1 and 2) by 42% by the year 2030.
The biomass briquettes are produced from agricultural waste and are compacted blocks of processed organic material. This renewable energy source not only supports the principles of the circular economy by recycling organic byproducts but also significantly reduces waste and enhances sustainability practices in production.
Nandini Piramal, the Chairperson of Piramal Pharma, stated, “Our shift to biomass briquettes at the Digwal facility showcases our commitment to minimizing our environmental footprint while fostering innovation in sustainable manufacturing. By aligning our objectives with global climate action frameworks, we will continue to contribute to a sustainable future for generations to come.”
Peter DeYoung, CEO of Piramal Global Pharma, emphasized the strategic importance of this conversion, saying, “This transformation at our Digwal site underscores our commitment to environmental management and sustainable operational practices. By transitioning to biomass briquettes, we significantly reduce our greenhouse gas emissions while setting new industry standards for responsible pharmaceutical manufacturing.”
Piramal Pharma's investment in renewable energy sources reflects not only its dedication to corporate responsibility but also showcases how pharmaceutical companies can incorporate effective climate action solutions while maintaining operational excellence. The move transitions the company towards a greener future, showcasing the potential for growth alongside environmental stewardship.
The Future of Biomass in Pharmaceuticals
The shift to biomass briquettes signifies a crucial turning point in the pharmaceutical sector's approach to environmental sustainability. This transition paves the way for other companies to explore renewable energy solutions, fostering an industry-wide shift towards more sustainable practices.
With a global network of operations, Piramal Pharma remains an influential leader in advocating for sustainable development within the pharmaceutical industry. Its initiatives demonstrate the company's responsibility and potential for growth in a climate-conscious world.
Piramal Pharma, with its expansive portfolio, operates 17 development and manufacturing sites worldwide and engages in a wide array of services, including contract development and manufacturing. Additionally, through its commitment to reducing its environmental impact, it aims to set an example for other organizations in the field.
As Piramal Pharma continues to spearhead these initiatives, the spotlight is on the broader pharmaceutical sector to follow suit, adopting greener practices and reducing their overall carbon footprint. The conversion at Digwal not only advances Piramal's sustainability goals but also enhances its reputation as a forward-thinking and responsible company dedicated to building a more sustainable future.
