Daikin and Astros Foundation Enhance Moody Park Community Center with $100K HVAC Upgrades

Major HVAC Upgrades for Moody Park Community Center

In a remarkable partnership between Daikin, a prominent air conditioning manufacturer, and the Astros Foundation, the Moody Park Community Center is set to receive significant HVAC upgrades worth $100,000. This initiative, part of the second annual Cooling Communities program, aims to bolster community support, enhance comfort, and ensure that year-round programming can thrive.

Strengthening Community Connections

Kristi Pittman, Senior Vice President of Human Resources at Daikin, expressed pride in the ongoing investment in Houston's communities. She noted, "We're proud to build on the momentum of Cooling Communities in its second year and continue investing where the need is greatest." The Moody Park Community Center serves as a crucial support hub for families, children, and seniors, particularly during extreme weather events. By upgrading the HVAC system, Daikin and the Astros Foundation aim to ensure that this essential facility continues to provide refuge and resources to the community.

Moody Park is located in Harris County Precinct 2, where it fulfills a vital role for residents. The center provides a space where community members can gather, connect, and receive support, especially during times of need, such as extreme heat or emergencies. Harris County Precinct 2 Commissioner Adrian Garcia emphasized the impact this investment would have, stating that it upgrades an important resource for the Near Northside community. He expressed gratitude for Daikin's and the Astros Foundation's commitment to enhancing local facilities.

Enhancing Infrastructure

Originally intended as a $50,000 investment, the funding for the Cooling Communities initiative was raised to $100,000 after an extensive infrastructure assessment. This increase underscores the urgency of addressing critical needs at Moody Park. The HVAC upgrades will involve replacing two systems, one of which is currently non-operational, ensuring a reliable and comfortable environment for community members throughout the year. Daikin's advanced inverter technology will be utilized in the new systems, enhancing performance and reliability.

Houston City Council Member Mario Castillo, who represents the district where Moody Park is situated, emphasized the importance of community centers as places for connection and support. "A community center is more than a building, it's where neighbors find connection, support, and safety," he said. The upgrades will help maintain Moody Park's status as a safe haven during Houston's hottest months.

A Sustainable Commitment

In addition to addressing immediate needs, the Cooling Communities initiative reflects a broader commitment by Daikin and the Astros Foundation to support local communities in the face of increasing challenges from climate extremes. This collaborative effort builds on last year’s successful launch of the initiative, which provided $55,000 in HVAC improvements to the Bayland Community Center in Harris County Precinct 4.

Emelda Douglas, Senior Vice President of Community Affairs for the Houston Astros, highlighted the significance of Moody Park to the community. She noted that the Astros Foundation has previously supported revitalization efforts for youth baseball fields in the park. The Cooling Communities initiative is seen as an extension of this support, aiming to foster a welcoming, comfortable environment where families can connect and receive aid.

To celebrate this significant investment, representatives from Daikin, the Astros Foundation, and local government will be honored on August 5 at Daikin Park, the home of the Houston Astros. This partnership represents a commitment to community well-being and sustainable urban living.
