Raj Kapoor Returns as CEO of Shipt Amid Strategic Transition
Raj Kapoor Returns as CEO of Shipt
In a significant move, Shipt, the national retail technology company known for its same-day delivery services, has announced that Raj Kapoor will be rejoining the company as its new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) starting October 18, 2026. This transition comes as Shipt prepares for its next chapter, with Kapoor bringing back his extensive experience and understanding of the firm's operations and culture.
Kapoor previously served as Shipt’s Chief Operating Officer (COO) from 2022 to 2025, a period during which he significantly enhanced the company’s capabilities and operational efficiencies. His leadership helped to scale Shipt’s fulfillment engine, optimizing the overall customer experience while ensuring that both shoppers and retailers enjoyed improved services.
Before his return to Shipt, Kapoor held the position of Senior Vice President of Marketplace at Target, where he was instrumental in driving profitable growth and refining customer experiences on the Target Plus platform. His impressive background also includes key roles at Lyft and SquareTrade, further solidifying his expertise in digital commerce and technology.
In a statement, Kapoor expressed his enthusiasm about returning to Shipt, noting, "What differentiates Shipt is the combination of innovative retail technology and our unwavering commitment to quality and service. I'm excited to rejoin Shipt, work with Target and our partners, and lead a team whose care and dedication I know firsthand. My focus is simple: enhance convenience for our customers, empower our shopper and driver community, and strengthen business performance across our offerings."
Raj Kapoor's appointment marks a new era for Shipt as it continues to strengthen its market position. The company's board chair, Sarah Travis, highlighted the strategic operational strengths that Kapoor brings back to Shipt, emphasizing that his understanding of both the business and consumer needs will be vital in navigating the competitive landscape of digital shopping and fulfillment.
Kapoor will take over from Kamau Witherspoon, the incumbent CEO who has led Shipt for over four years. Under Witherspoon's guidance, Shipt underwent a remarkable transformation, expanding its same-day and next-day delivery options and enhancing its offerings within Target’s ecosystem. Witherspoon has decided to pursue new opportunities after a renowned tenure at Target, with the promise to remain until late October to facilitate a smooth leadership transition.
Reflecting on his time at Shipt, Witherspoon shared, "In the past few years, we have scaled our technology and built a resilient operational engine across our same-day and next-day delivery offerings—all while staying true to our core belief that human connection is our greatest differentiator. I am profoundly grateful for our team, our retail partners, and our shopper and driver community who deliver care with every order. Having worked side-by-side with Raj, I know he is the right leader to guide this incredible team forward."
Shipt operates as an independently managed subsidiary of Target, focusing on two primary areas: same-day delivery connecting members with over 120 retailers, and the Target Last Mile Delivery (TLMD) service, which offers next-day parcel delivery for Target customers. Currently, Shipt’s same-day delivery service already covers 80% of the United States population. The company has earned accolades for its excellent customer service, including recognition from Ipsos for providing the "best delivery experience" in the industry and a spot on Newsweek’s 2026 list of "America's Best Customer Service."
Headquartered in Birmingham, Alabama, Shipt also maintains additional hubs in San Francisco and Minneapolis. Kapoor will primarily base his operations in the San Francisco Bay Area while regularly visiting Birmingham and Minneapolis to stay connected with his teams.
As Raj Kapoor steps back into the role of CEO, all eyes will be on how he will leverage his past experience at Shipt and his recent tenure at Target to innovate and enhance service offerings in the rapidly evolving landscape of retail technology. Shipt’s commitment to delivering joy with every order—balancing accessibility and quality—remains at the forefront of its mission as it moves forward under new leadership.
