Ericsson Expands Partnership with Virgin Media O2 to Enhance UK RAN Network

In a significant move towards advancing mobile connectivity in the UK, Ericsson has announced an extension of its partnership with Virgin Media O2, becoming the primary radio access network (RAN) partner. Over the next five years, this collaboration will enhance Virgin Media O2's nationwide RAN, a critical element of their Mobile Transformation Plan, thereby improving connectivity for millions of users.

The partnership is expected to be financially beneficial for Ericsson, securing them several hundred million Euros in revenues. Virgin Media O2 has acknowledged the importance of this partnership as they aim to boost their mobile service quality amid an increasing demand; the company's mobile traffic has already more than doubled in the last five years alone.

Patrick Johansson, Head of Europe, Middle East and Africa at Ericsson, emphasized the trust and successful history between the two organizations. He stated, "Virgin Media O2 is a close and trusted customer and partner of Ericsson's. That trust is reflected in the RAN footprint increase in this partnership extension," indicating a robust future for both the companies.

Jeanie York, CTO of Virgin Media O2, elaborated on the benefits of the Mobile Transformation Plan, highlighting the commitment to deliver fast and reliable connectivity to all users, no matter where they are located. The upgrade will leverage Ericsson's advanced technologies, including AI-powered analytics and multiband radio capabilities to maximize efficiency within the network.

Key components of this network enhancement include additional deployment of Ericsson's Radio System products, specifically the energy-efficient and advanced multiband Massive MIMO radios. These improvements are integral to achieving the objectives set out in the Mobile Transformation Plan, primarily aimed at upgrading the existing infrastructure to support additional 5G mid-band spectrum technology.

With plans to unlock greater efficiency and capacity, this new chapter in the Ericsson and Virgin Media O2 relationship is set to reshape mobile connectivity across the UK. By ensuring that the 5G Standalone (SA) connectivity is effectively utilized, Virgin Media O2 aims to provide differentiated services that cater to specific application, enterprise, and industry needs.

The deployment of Ericsson's intelligent optimization software, which leverages machine learning, will significantly enhance the overall performance of the network. Not only is this expected to improve user experiences for existing customers, but it will also facilitate an increase in the customer base transitioning to 5G SA, which is currently available to 87% of the UK population.

This latest development follows previous investments from Virgin Media O2’s Mobile Transformation Plan, which focused on enhancing performance through strategic network densification and improved services at key hotspots like stadiums and transportation hubs. Furthermore, these revisions encompass plans to extend coverage to previously underserved areas, bolstering the company’s social responsibility commitments.

As the telecom industry continues to evolve, the partnership between Ericsson and Virgin Media O2 reflects a commitment to innovation and operational excellence, ensuring they remain at the forefront of mobile technology advancements. With the integration of modern technologies and an unwavering focus on improving customer experiences, this collaboration promises to set a precedent for reliability and efficiency in telecommunications across the UK and beyond.
