Permag™ Begins Major Expansion of Samarium Cobalt Magnet Manufacturing in the US

Permag™ Expands Its Samarium Cobalt Magnet Manufacturing Capacity

Permag™, the sole producer of samarium cobalt (SmCo) magnets in the United States, has made headlines with its announcement of a substantial investment aimed at boosting its manufacturing capabilities. The initiative is vital, as it seeks to strengthen the domestic supply chain of essential magnetics, responding to a growing global demand.

Located in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, Permag's Electron Energy Corporation (EEC) facility is set to undertake a multi-million-dollar investment that will more than double its current production capacity. This significant expansion reflects Permag's commitment to meeting the increasing needs of various industries such as aerospace, defense, and medical technology, which rely heavily on a stable supply of SmCo magnets for their operations.

The expansion includes the installation of cutting-edge alloying, pressing, and fabrication equipment that will enhance the facility's efficiency and production outputs. Joe Stupfel, CEO of Permag, emphasized the critical nature of SmCo magnets in global industries and the company’s strategic position to cater to this rising demand. He stated, “Critical industries around the world rely on a stable and secure supply of SmCo magnets, and we are in a unique position to meet the growing demand for this essential material.”

Permag has a rich history of providing high-end magnetic solutions for over 70 years, and this latest investment aims not only to expand its manufacturing capacity but also to ensure it can meet the specific needs of its customers. The company prides itself on being the only vertically integrated supplier of SmCo magnets and magnetic assemblies, allowing it to offer enhanced solutions to meet diverse customer requirements effectively.

Furthermore, the company has outlined its plans to achieve compliance with DFARS 252.225-7052 standards for both neodymium-iron-boron (NdFeB) and SmCo magnets by mid-2026, well ahead of the deadline set for January 2027. This proactive approach underscores Permag's commitment to quality and compliance, enhancing its reputation in the industry.

With the support of its associated companies—Dexter Magnetic Technologies and Magnetic Component Engineering—Permag is poised to solidify its position as a leader in the field of high-performance magnetic solutions. Their combined efforts will enable them to respond effectively to the surging demands the markets are expected to present in the coming years.

In conclusion, as Permag embarks on this ambitious expansion, it not only bolsters its manufacturing capabilities but also contributes significantly to the resilience of the domestic supply chain. This move is a clear indication of the company's commitment to providing high-quality magnetic solutions while supporting critical industries that depend on these innovative technologies.
