Clarivate AI50: Highlighting 50 Leading Innovators in AI This Year

Clarivate Announces AI50: Recognizing Leading Organizations in AI Innovation

On March 26, 2026, Clarivate Plc, a global leader in innovative intelligence, introduced the AI50, a new benchmark that identifies 50 organizations noted for their substantial advancements in artificial intelligence (AI). This report follows the recent release of the Top 100 Global Innovators 2026 and marks the inaugural announcement of the AI50 list.

The AI50 analysis delves into how these organizations are driving AI innovation, from foundational technology creation to complex system implementation and expansions within various products, business processes, and industrial settings. Notably, over half of the organizations included in the AI50 also made it to the 2026 Top 100 Global Innovators list.

The organizations selected for the AI50 exhibit a concentration in specific countries and key industrial sectors. Approximately 80% of these organizations hail from four primary locations: mainland China (15), the United States (14), South Korea (6), and Japan (6). Additionally, there is a significant representation of government and academic research institutions, coupled with many companies from software and media, electronics and computing, and semiconductor industries. These regions and sectors have established mechanisms for continuous talent development, a robust supplier ecosystem, and international collaboration, all of which contribute to accelerated innovation and rapid implementation.

The analysis for AI50 was conducted by the Clarivate Center for IP and Innovation Research, employing in-depth methods based on the Derwent World Patents Index (DWPI). The study utilized the Derwent Strength Index, which measures invention impact, success, rarity, and geographical investment.

Maroun S. Mourad, President of Clarivate's Intellectual Property Division, remarked, "In a time when the global economy is undergoing significant transformation, the organizations recognized in AI50 are at the forefront. These entities are known for their technological influence and produce a remarkable percentage of patented AI inventions that are protected in multiple countries. Their cognitive systems and integrated intelligence will serve as the foundation for shaping the next industrial era."

Roy Jakobs, CEO of Philips, commented, "AI is evolving into a new phase that generates tangible value in the real world. The Clarivate AI50 illustrates just how deeply AI is being integrated into systems that structure industries and everyday life. Companies like Philips leading the medtech field are leveraging AI as a trusted partner to enhance patient care, clearly demonstrating the measurable results achieved through smarter products and services. Our focus now is to responsibly scale these advancements, delivering sustainable value to people and society."

Key Findings from the Report

  • - Organizations spearheading foundational AI technologies include Alphabet, Huawei, IBM, Microsoft, NVIDIA, Tencent, and prominent Chinese universities, all of which are leading core technology development through groundbreaking patent innovations in model architecture, hardware, and platform technologies.
  • - Specific domain-focused AI innovations are fostered by companies such as Accenture, Alibaba, ByteDance, ETRI, KAIST, KLA, and Tata Consultancy Services, which are developing highly specialized AI technologies tailored to particular applications, enhancing high-value practical applications.
  • - A high degree of international and academic collaboration is evident, with about 10% of inventions in the AI50 linked to joint research with academic institutions—higher than the global average of 7%—and approximately 20% resulting from international teams of inventors, again exceeding the global average of 7%.
  • - Public research plays a significant role in the AI50; government-related and academic research institutions represent a substantial proportion of this list, indicating that publicly funded research is crucial for developing foundational AI technologies.

Evaluation Methodology

The AI50 was determined based on an analysis of AI-related inventions recorded in the Derwent World Patents Index. By using Clarivate’s unique invention strength metric, only the top 0.5% of AI inventions were extracted. The selected inventions had to belong to patent families held in two or more countries. Each invention was attributed to the most recent holding organization, and entities were ranked based on the number of relevant inventions they possessed. As a result, a total of 50 organizations (52 this year due to ties) were recognized as part of the AI50.
