LAX/Metro Transit Center Station Opens
On June 7, 2025, the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) marked a significant milestone with the grand opening of the LAX/Metro Transit Center Station. This new infrastructure serves as a vital connection between local communities and the international hub of Los Angeles, LAX. As the city gears up to host major events like the FIFA World Cup 2026, Super Bowl LXI, and the Olympic Games in 2028, this station plays a crucial role in transforming the transportation landscape
The LAX/Metro Transit Center represents a monumental change in how Angelenos and visitors travel to and from the airport. Previously centered around automobiles, the Los Angeles transportation network is evolving to promote more sustainable and efficient methods of travel. As Metro Board Chair and LA County Supervisor Janice Hahn stated, "The wait is over, Los Angeles. We are finally getting a train to LAX."
The station serves as part of the broader initiative named Twenty-Eight by '28, aimed at overhauling and modernizing various transportation systems across the region before the upcoming global events. Providing a seamless connection, the Transit Center integrates the Metro C and K lines, alongside multiple bus routes, ensuring comprehensive access for all.
The architectural design is striking and user-friendly, with spacious areas and intuitive navigation that enables easy access to various modes of local transport and the soon-to-be-operational Automated People Mover (APM), which will link the terminals directly to public transport. As explained by LA Mayor Karen Bass, this opening is not just about getting people to the airport—it’s about establishing a better-connected city.
The LAX/Metro Transit Center Station is also a boon for local employment. As Holly Mitchell, LA County Supervisor and Metro Board member highlighted, LAX is not only one of the world's busiest airports but also a major employment hub for the residents of Los Angeles. The station will enhance connectivity for workers commuting to the airport daily, reducing reliance on personal vehicles and other more expensive transportation options.
Equipped with state-of-the-art features, the station feels like a modern transport hub. It includes a bus terminal, bicycle facilities, and customer service centers, spanning over 1,100 meters from north to south. The dual-level platform offers spacious waiting areas and is designed for maximum accessibility. Security personnel will monitor the station around the clock, enhancing safety and comfort for travelers.
The commitment to sustainability is prevalent throughout the station's construction; it boasts numerous green features such as energy-efficient lighting and landscaping with local flora, showcasing Metro's commitment to eco-friendly development and regional mobility improvements.
As the APM is set to launch in 2026, the station will offer an even more direct link through a network of six stops, establishing unparalleled access for residents and visitors alike. Shuttle services are already in place to accommodate passengers while they wait for the train to operate, ensuring minimal disruption and an easy connection to the city’s various public transit options.
Renowned artist Glenn Kaino’s sculpture,
The Distance of the Sun, welcomes visitors to the station, showcasing a blend of artistic and cultural significance that embodies Los Angeles’ vibrant landscape. This strategic fresco serves as a visual reminder of the city’s goals for the future, promoting collective ambition and shared hope.
The LAX/Metro Transit Center Station stands as a landmark project for Los Angeles and its residents. The station not only elevates the travel experience for millions but also serves as a crucial component in Metro's vision for a more sustainable, integrated transit system. As CEO of Metro Stephanie Wiggins articulated, this achievement is a promise fulfilled, connecting Angelenos to economic opportunities and educational resources, redefining what public transit can achieve for the city.
