Taking Your First Step with the Tokyo Universal Walking App Campaign
This year, Tokyo is excited to launch the
Tokyo Universal Walking Campaign, a fitting initiative aimed at promoting walking in an inclusive environment. With routes designed to accommodate everyone, including people with disabilities, this program encourages all citizens to enjoy walking regardless of age or ability.
What is the Tokyo Universal Walking Campaign?
The campaign is scheduled to run in September and October, coinciding with the
Tokyo Para Sports Month. It allows participants to engage in walking activities via a dedicated mobile application, making it easy to enjoy walking at their convenience. This campaign not only promotes physical activity but also heightens awareness of para sports initiatives.
Understanding Para Sports Month
The
Tokyo Para Sports Month is an extraordinary time when various para sports events take place throughout the city. This initiative aims to celebrate the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games by engaging the community and enhancing the visibility and popularity of para sports.
Features of the Tokyo Universal Walking App
The app, called
‘ippo’ (meaning ‘step’ in Japanese), includes a variety of features tailored to assist users of all abilities. Here are some key functionalities:
1. Barrier-Free Walking Routes
Participants can choose from 15 carefully selected walking routes that have been verified for accessibility. Examples include routes that showcase art, culture, and history, such as the scenic Ueno and Yushima Course. Each route has been crafted to ensure it can be navigated comfortably by individuals using wheelchairs.
2. Audio Navigation Assistance
For those who may be unfamiliar with the routes, the app provides audio directions at every checkpoint, guiding walkers seamlessly through their chosen paths.
3. Activity Monitoring
The app tracks your walking duration and converts that into step count, allowing wheelchair users and walkers to participate equally in the campaign. This feature encourages a comprehensive approach to wellness, as every step taken contributes to a sense of accomplishment.
Campaign Overview
The walking campaign consists of two distinct activities:
1. Course Completion Campaign
Walkers can participate in a challenge to complete designated routes. Upon finishing these routes, participants can enter for a chance to win exciting branded merchandise. The course completion campaign runs for two months, starting on September 1, 2025, and concluding on October 31, 2025.
2. Goal Achievement Campaign
In this segment, participants can set personalized walking goals based on their capability. They are encouraged to complete their goals multiple times each month to enter a lottery for fabulous prizes. This campaign lasts for six months, subdivided into six stages, to motivate ongoing participation.
