JUNA Surpasses 100 Electric Trucks in Operational Milestone
In a remarkable achievement within just over two years, JUNA has successfully launched an impressive fleet of electric trucks, surpassing the landmark of 100 vehicles in operation across Europe. This joint venture between Scania and sennder has not only made strides in bringing electric heavy-duty transport to the forefront but also showcases the potential of a sustainable transport network across the continent.
Currently, JUNA operates around 110 electric trucks across four key European markets: Germany, Italy, Poland, and the Netherlands. The company is aiming to expand its fleet to approximately 150 trucks by the end of the year. The growth of JUNA's fleet reflects a significant advancement in the transition to electric heavy-duty transport, evidencing that commercial viability is achievable when appropriate partnerships are formed and innovative solutions are devised.
JUNA takes a comprehensive approach by closely collaborating with shippers and freight forwarders to gain insights into their transport requirements and challenges. From there, they identify suitable routes for electric trucks and seamlessly integrate these vehicles into existing logistics networks. Moreover, JUNA is committed to providing support to carriers by offering route and usage analysis, technical assistance, and a flexible pay-per-use model that helps to mitigate financial barriers associated with electric vehicle adoption.
Electric trucks typically come with a hefty price tag, often costing two to three times that of traditional diesel vehicles. This poses a challenge to many carriers, particularly smaller operations, as about 70 percent of trucks on European roads are operated by carriers maintaining fleets of fewer than ten vehicles. JUNA's innovative model addresses this significant hurdle by minimizing upfront costs, empowering more carriers to join the electric revolution without needing to finance vehicles independently.
Gustaf Sundell, Executive Vice President and Head of Ventures and New Business at Scania Group, shared insights on their vision: "When we set out to build JUNA with sennder, our goal was to show that electric trucks could work commercially for carriers while helping shippers decarbonise the transport networks they depend on. Reaching 100 trucks across four markets highlights that this proof point is real and bolsters our foundation for future growth."
David Nothacker, Co-founder and CEO of sennder, emphasized the necessity for solutions that are compatible with real transport networks, stating, "The transition to electric road freight demands adaptable solutions that seamlessly connect shipper demand with the operational realities faced by carriers, facilitating the integration of electric trucks into daily logistics at scale."
Since its inception, JUNA has established trusting relationships with major shippers, including partnerships with Nestlé to reduce CO₂ emissions and support logistical operations for Beiersdorf in Hamburg. As of today, JUNA's fleet has collectively travelled an astounding 3.9 million kilometers—equivalent to approximately 100 journeys around the globe—indicating the significant impact of electric transport on efficiency and sustainability.
JUNA remains committed to expanding its fleet and further driving the transition towards greener road transport throughout Europe, championing the cause of electric heavy-duty vehicles that pave the way for a more sustainable future.
