Shoichi Launches Comprehensive Recycling Program for Bags, Shoes, and Cosmetic Containers

Comprehensive Recycling Initiative by Shoichi

As the world increases its focus on sustainability and environmental conservation, the apparel recycling sector is gaining momentum. Shoichi Inc., based in Tokyo and Osaka, is taking a significant step forward by launching a comprehensive recycling program for bags, shoes, and cosmetic containers starting in November 2024. The company is dedicated to combating waste in the fashion and beauty industries and aims to set a precedent in recycling practices.

Innovative Technology for High-Quality Recycling

Shoichi has partnered with Doshin Industry Co., Ltd., located in Izumi Otsu City, Osaka, to implement advanced recycling technology that was previously unavailable for complex materials like leather and synthetic leather. This technology, featuring a state-of-the-art crushing machine, allows Shoichi to recycle products that consist of multiple layers of materials—something that has presented challenges in the past. By crushing these items into fine, wool-like fibers, the company can reuse these materials as industrial materials for automotive applications and other uses after undergoing a felt-making process. The recycling scheme developed includes the separation of shoes into soles and upper parts for more effective processing.

Cosmetic Container Recycling Efforts

In addition to bags and shoes, Shoichi is also extending its recycling efforts to cosmetic containers. They are recovering unused products from companies’ stock, removing labels and contents, conducting simple cleansing, and sorting materials accordingly. These processes are carried out by a support facility operated by Shoichi Group, contributing to the employment of individuals with disabilities while promoting a more inclusive workplace.

Leveraging Flexibility in Small Enterprises

According to Shoichi's representative, Masakazu Yamamoto, "Small companies like ours have the flexibility to approach areas that larger enterprises find challenging. We want to raise awareness that engaging Shoichi allows brands to maintain their values while participating in recycling initiatives spanning not just clothing but also bags, shoes, and cosmetic containers.” This philosophy signifies a shift towards inviting more businesses to engage in responsible recycling practices that can bolster their environmental responsibility and brand image.

Looking Ahead

Shoichi is committed to broadening the scope of its recycling efforts and enhancing sustainability across the apparel industry. The company welcomes inquiries from enterprises regarding surplus inventory and recycling processes, providing a platform for brands to collaborate on sustainability initiatives.
