AbbVie Collaborates with Acclaimed Filmmaker to Highlight Resilience in Blood Cancer Lives

AbbVie’s Inspiring Short Film "Second Winds"

AbbVie, a global biopharmaceutical leader, has recently unveiled a powerful short film titled Second Winds. The film highlights the courageous stories of three individuals living with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), a common yet serious form of blood cancer that affects over 200,000 people in the U.S. alone. Premiered on November 13 in Los Angeles, the event was hosted by celebrated actor and advocate, Jesse Tyler Ferguson.

Capturing Personal Journeys

In Second Winds, we meet three inspiring individuals: Christina, Jeff, and Alejandro. Christina was diagnosed with CLL in 2013 and has since become an advocate by leading peer support groups for those newly diagnosed. Jeff, a retiree who has faced CLL for two decades, showcases remarkable endurance through his journey. Lastly, Alejandro, an environmental engineer and father of three, was diagnosed in 2020 but continues to embrace life enthusiastically.

The film takes audiences on an emotional journey that illustrates how diagnosis can redefine one’s purpose and joy in life. Through the unwavering support of their families and communities, each subject finds strength to stay active, pursuing passions that include hiking, cycling, and skiing.

A Message of Resilience

Andy Souers, Ph.D., AbbVie’s VP and distinguished research fellow in Oncology Discovery Research, emphasized, "Second Winds shines a powerful light on the resilience and hope of people living with chronic lymphocytic leukemia." He noted that AbbVie is dedicated not just to developing treatment options for blood cancer but also to amplifying the inspiring narratives of those affected.

Hosted by Jesse Tyler Ferguson, who stated, "Cancer has touched my own family, so I know firsthand how deeply it can impact one's perspective on life," the premiere of Second Winds went beyond mere entertainment. Ferguson highlighted that the film underscores how people can rediscover purpose even when grappling with life-altering diagnoses. "It’s a way to honor their strength and resilience," he added.

Directorial Insight

Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Dominic Gill, known for works like Planetwalker and Last Call for the Bayou, the film offers a unique perspective on survival and determination. Gill expressed his honor in directing a film that shines a light on the journeys of these remarkable individuals. His collaboration with AbbVie enabled his team to portray authentic stories of perseverance and hope.

A Broader Context

Chronic lymphocytic leukemia, diagnosed in most patients over the age of 65, remains predominantly a condition affecting older Caucasian males. However, its implications on the quality of life among affected individuals correlate with their treatment options and support systems. With more than 23,000 new cases projected in the U.S. for 2025, the urgency for awareness and support in this domain has never been greater.

Second Winds will be available for viewing on the LA Times Studios Short Docs platform and AbbVie’s official YouTube channel. The film is slated for streaming on Documentary+ beginning December 2025.
