Starwood Hotels Presents a Sustainable Retreat in Hudson Valley Region

Starwood Hotels Announces an Eco-Friendly Retreat in Hudson Valley

Starwood Hotels, known for its commitment to sustainability and innovative hospitality, has announced the launch of 1 Hotel & Homes Hudson Valley, set against the beautiful backdrop of Fifth Lake in Ulster County, New York. This project is significant as it aims to combine luxurious living with sustainable practices, reflecting the growing demand for eco-conscious travel experiences.

A Scenic Location

Situated less than a two-hour drive from Midtown Manhattan, this new development is ideally located at the intersection of Rosendale and Kingston, nestled in the scenic foothills of the Catskills. The expansive site covers 775 acres that are abundant in natural beauty, featuring lush orchards, mesmerizing caves, extensive trails, and three scenic lakes, including the pristine Fifth Lake which is celebrated for its crystal-clear waters.

Barry Sternlicht, the founder of 1 Hotels and chairman of Starwood Hotels, emphasized the project’s aim: "At 1 Hotels, we believe true luxury is living in harmony with nature. This hotel will be a place for guests to slow down and reconnect with the natural world." This philosophy underpins the luxurious experience the hotel aims to deliver.

Intricate Historical Significance

The property, once home to the historical Williams Lake Hotel, has a rich past dating back to the 1920s. Today, under the visionary guidance of Hudson River Valley Resorts, LLC and Principal Richard Steele, the plan emphasizes not only luxury but also ecological integrity, with over 500 acres dedicated to conservation.

Steele shares, “Our mission has always been to honor the land's historical significance while creating a sustainable community that resonates with nature lovers and those seeking refuge from urban life.”

Resort Features and Design

The 1 Hotel & Homes Hudson Valley is set to open its doors in 2028, with residential opportunities for purchase beginning in Summer 2026. The resort will boast approximately 100 guest rooms and suites, designed in line with the biophilic principles that characterize 1 Hotels. The architecture will incorporate natural materials and expansive views of the lakes and mountains, embodying a seamless indoor-outdoor experience.

“There is a unique opportunity to create a timeless destination here,” said John Woodruff, Development Manager of JAG Development Corp.
