ZACROS Achieves Approval for Internal-PCR System Enhancing Carbon Footprint Calculation

ZACROS Obtains Approval for the Internal-PCR System

ZACROS Co., Ltd., headquartered in Bunkyo-ku, Tokyo, has made significant strides in sustainability by gaining approval from the Sustainable Management Promotion Organization (SuMPO) for its Internal-PCR (Product Category Rule) system. This system pertains to the calculation of the carbon footprint (CFP) of the company's extensive range of products, including bags, raw materials, and coatings, as of May 12, 2026.

Background of the Approval

In recent years, climate change has intensified, prompting countries worldwide to adopt measures to decrease carbon emissions. To achieve a carbon-neutral society, many firms across various sectors are increasingly focusing on visualizing and addressing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions related to their products. However, because accurate CFP calculations require high levels of expertise, the quality of these calculations can vary due to differences among calculators and production sites. In Europe, instances of perceived greenwashing have added to the urgency for credibility and transparency in environmental claims.

To tackle these challenges, ZACROS unified its internal calculation rules and sought external validation. This led to their successful acquisition of the Internal-PCR approval from SuMPO, which is a critical step towards enhancing the reliability of their CFP assessments.

About the Internal-PCR Approval System

The Internal-PCR approval system has been developed by SuMPO, which has more than 20 years of experience in Lifecycle Assessment (LCA). This system evaluates and approves the CFP calculation rules set by businesses. By receiving this approval, ZACROS ensures that its calculation guidelines align with the international LCA standards of ISO 14040 and ISO 14044, thus guaranteeing the reliability and appropriateness of its calculation methods.

Future Initiatives

Having secured this approval, ZACROS will leverage the Internal-PCR system for its CFP assessments moving forward. This system will assist in responding to inquiries from partners and facilitate the evaluation of environmental impacts during product development, ultimately contributing to efforts aimed at achieving carbon neutrality.

Additionally, ZACROS has also engaged in crafting a set of CFP calculation rules for plastic containers and packaging, released in March 2026. The recently approved Internal-PCR system is consistent with the guidelines established for this packaging sector.
