NTT Facilities Launches a Cutting-Edge Cooling Hub



NTT Facilities, headquartered in Minato, Tokyo, has officially opened its latest facility, the Products Engineering Hub for Data Center Cooling, additionally known as DC Cooling Hub. Slated to start full operations on April 22, 2025, this hub aims to validate advanced cooling systems specifically designed for data centers accommodating generative AI workloads.

With the rise of high-performance GPU servers that generate significant heat, optimal cooling solutions are more critical than ever. The focus at the DC Cooling Hub will be on verifying effective liquid cooling systems, particularly crucial as liquid-cooled servers become standard in data centers. The setup incorporates a Coolant Distribution Unit (CDU) that delivers coolant directly to the servers, paired with stainless steel piping designed for liquid cooling, enhancing operational efficiency.

The facility's structure includes three distinct zones, each supporting different aspects of data center air conditioning:

1. Data Hall Area


In this section, server racks are outfitted with simulated loads, allowing for testing of various cooling methodologies. This area supports both liquid cooling with a capacity of 360 kW and air cooling with a capacity of 420 kW. The CDU used is manufactured by Envicool, a company recognized for its extensive experience in liquid cooling solutions across Asia. Smaller, packaged solutions, like skid-type CDUs, have also been included, aimed at cooling GPUs effectively.

2. Air Conditioning Installation Area


This zone showcases advanced air conditioning machines from STULZ, a partner in this project. Featured equipment includes water-cooled systems and models capable of hybrid outdoor air cooling. One prominent installation is the large-capacity CDU engineered specifically for the Japanese market, allowing for high-density setups without the need for extensive maintenance space—an ideal solution for land-constrained environments.

In addition, a learning area has been created in this section, promoting the training of construction and maintenance technicians for the data center industry and facilitating an informative environment for operators.

3. Heat Source Equipment Installation Area


Located in this zone, the oil-free chiller from SMARDT represents the latest in cooling technology, pivotal for future data centers. This unit, along with Evapco's hybrid dry cooler, highlights the facility's commitment to innovative, eco-friendly solutions. These installations emphasize the potential for a chiller-less cooling system, which could revolutionize traditional cooling methodologies.

Future Outlook


Looking ahead, the Products Engineering Hub for Data Center Cooling plans continuous upgrades to meet the evolving needs of data center operators, including the introduction of new refrigerant-compatible air conditioning systems. By leveraging this hub, NTT Facilities aims to deliver a comprehensive array of cooling solutions, ranging from liquid to air cooling systems, tailored for the impending revolution in generative AI data centers.
