Teamsters Local 986 Secures Significant Contract for Rio Hotel Workers
Las Vegas, NV — January 16, 2026 — Workers at the Rio Hotel and Casino, represented by Teamsters Local 986, have made a historical decision to ratify a strong four-year collective bargaining agreement. This contract marks a significant victory for the 62 members of the casino’s front desk, labor, warehouse, and valet teams, ensuring they receive better wages, enhanced benefits, and stronger workplace protections.
The ratification follows a nearly two-year-long negotiation period, characterized by stalled talks and rising tensions. As negotiations progressed, Teamsters Local 986 members voted on November 10 to authorize a strike due to perceived unfair labor practices by management. This vote highlighted the workers' resolve and determination to advocate for their rights.
Tim Vera, the President of Local 986, expressed pride in the solidarity shown by the workers: "Our members stood strong, and management had no other choice but to deliver. This win belongs to every worker who refused to be ignored, and it proves that when we fight as one, we secure real improvements."
The four-year agreement provides a
15 percent wage increase, alongside improved vacation policies and continued coverage under the Teamsters Health and Welfare plan. Notably, the contract also includes job protections against the impact of technology and offers workers the option to enroll in the Teamsters 401(k) plan, improving their financial security.
Malinda Zarcone, a front desk worker and steward at Local 986, reflected on the significance of the agreement: "All we asked for was a fair contract that allows us to do our job without worrying. We didn't want to strike, but we were ready if it came to that. Now we can come to work knowing that management listened and that our labor is respected."
Tommy Blitsch, Director of the Teamsters Convention, Trade Show, and Casino Division, emphasized the importance of accountability in negotiations: "Management dragged out negotiations, and our members held them accountable. We don't tolerate delays or disrespect towards our members. We're always prepared to take action and win."
This agreement not only strengthens the position of casino workers at the Rio but also serves as a reminder of the rights and dignity that labor unions advocate for in the workplace. The Teamsters represent close to 6,000 members across casinos and casino hotels nationwide, highlighting the integral role of organized labor in protecting workers’ rights.
Founded in 1903, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters represents approximately 1.3 million hardworking individuals across the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico. As the labor landscape continues to evolve, victories like that of the Rio Hotel workers showcase the power of unity and collective bargaining in achieving meaningful change.
