A Crossroads of Craftsmanship and Aesthetics in Asakusa
Asakusa's bustling streets just witnessed the grand opening of
ENGAWA ASAKUSA, a multifaceted store that brings together the essence of Japanese craftsmanship and aesthetic sensibilities. Owned by ENGWA Co., Ltd., headquartered in Tokyo's Minato Ward and led by CEO Takanobu Ushiyama, this innovative store officially opened its doors on
October 19, 2025. The establishment aims to become a hub that connects Japan's beauty and ideas to the world, especially catering to inbound tourism.
ENGAWA ASAKUSA is strategically located just two minutes by foot from the iconic Sensoji Temple, making it easily accessible for tourists and locals. The store features a
select shop showcasing more than
400 unique items collected from across Japan. These include products awarded with the prestigious
OMOTENASHI Selection, which highlights the best of Japanese craftsmanship, traditional arts, and innovative lifestyle goods. Not only is it a store for souvenirs and gifts, but it is also envisioned as a space where visitors can rediscover the essence of Japan.
Discover Japanese Tea in the Café-Bar
One of the standout features of ENGAWA ASAKUSA is its
café-bar, curated in partnership with
Soejimaen, a traditional tea farm based in Ureshino, Saga Prefecture. Here, patrons can savor freshly brewed sencha, sencha lattes, and even tea-infused beer, redefining the enjoyment of Japanese tea. A signature offering, the gluten-free
Gâteau Fromage created in collaboration with Maison Fujiya Hakodate, has garnered rave reviews, making it a popular stopping point for those exploring Asakusa.
The café-bar also screens promotional videos from Soejimaen, providing visitors insight into the tea-making process and the scenery of the tea-producing regions across Japan. This immersive experience allows both international visitors and locals to appreciate the depth and diversity of Japanese tea culture.
A Dynamic Select Shop
The select shop at ENGAWA ASAKUSA spotlights a curated collection that spans traditional crafts to innovative goods, ensuring there is always something new and exciting for each visit. The store frequently showcases products from diverse regions while incorporating feedback from foreign editors at
Tokyo Weekender, enhancing the curated experience with international perspectives. This dynamic aspect of retail aims to foster a sense of discovery each time a visitor steps inside.
Engaging with Craftsmen through Telepresence
At the recent launch event on
October 17, a special demonstration utilized a cutting-edge
telepresence system, referred to as
“Mado,” to connect live with a crafts workshop situated in Takasaki, Gunma Prefecture. Attendees were able to witness artists meticulously painting Daruma dolls, with real-time interactions providing a sense of presence within the workshop. This interactive experience is set to continue regularly at the Asakusa store, allowing guests to communicate live with craftsmen from various fields, including sake breweries and textile artisans.
CEO Takanobu Ushiyama's Vision
Speaking at the opening, CEO
Takanobu Ushiyama expressed enthusiasm about providing a platform that fosters real connections between skilled craftsmen and consumers. He shared, “With the opening of ENGAWA ASAKUSA, we aim to deliver genuine experiences of the skills and thoughts of artisans across Japan to both domestic and international guests. We envision this place as akin to a traditional
engawa—a space connecting people, regions, and the world.” His commitment to showcasing the thoughtful craftsmanship intrinsic to Japanese culture is an integral part of the store's mission.
ENGAWA ASAKUSA: More than a Store
ENGAWA ASAKUSA strives to be more than just a retail space; it aims to be a cultural center where experiences of Japanese beauty and tradition are accessible to everyone. This multifaceted store provides an innovative avenue for both cultural exchange and experiential learning. Visitors can not only shop but also participate in workshops and events that further celebrate Japan's rich heritage.
Conveniently situated just a short walk from Asakusa Station, ENGAWA ASAKUSA promises to be an integral landmark in the vibrant Asakusa area. It seeks to capture the beauty and creativity of Japan, transforming that essence into experiences that resonate with people globally, now and in the future.
