Blue Shield of California Appoints Hayley Park to Innovate Pharmacy Services for Health Plan Members

In a significant step towards enhancing pharmacy services for its members, Blue Shield of California has officially named Hayley Park, PharmD, as its new senior vice president and chief pharmacy officer. This announcement marks a major milestone for the nonprofit health plan as it seeks to innovate and streamline its pharmacy services, thereby making medications more accessible and affordable for its members.

Dr. Park brings over 25 years of extensive experience in healthcare, particularly in pharmacy operations and management. Before joining Blue Shield, she served as the vice president of Pharmacy Operations and Services at Kaiser Permanente Northern California, where she was pivotal in modernizing pharmacy care processes and implementing cost-reduction strategies for prescription drugs. Her exceptional background in clinical pharmacy and her dedication to patient-centric care make her a valuable addition to the Blue Shield team.

In her new role, Dr. Park will oversee Blue Shield's prescription drug programs, focusing on increasing transparency and affordability in medication management. She is set to lead the Pharmacy Care Reimagined initiative, a unique pharmacy management model aimed at enhancing members' pharmacy experiences. The initiative's goal is to provide sustainable health outcomes while ensuring that members' needs are prioritized throughout the healthcare journey.

Susan Mullaney, chief operating officer at Blue Shield, expressed her confidence in Dr. Park's capabilities, stating, "Hayley is a dedicated and experienced pharmacy leader committed to helping individuals access the medications they need at prices they can afford. Her purpose-driven leadership will aid us in building a healthcare system that is both sustainable and worthy of our family and friends."

During her tenure at Kaiser Permanente, Dr. Park successfully led initiatives that significantly reduced prescription drug costs for members by refining drug selection and management processes, particularly for complex and high-cost treatments. She played a crucial role during the COVID-19 pandemic, where she was instrumental in the planning and execution of a nationwide vaccination effort for Kaiser Permanente, including establishing large-scale vaccination sites.

Dr. Park highlighted her motivation for joining Blue Shield, stating, "What attracted me to Blue Shield is its nonprofit mission dedicated to improving member health and lives—not just reducing drug costs. I'm excited to join an organization that is transforming healthcare to make it more accessible for everyone, especially as pharmacy care evolves to be more personalized and connected."

Holding an MBA from Northwestern University's Kellogg School of Management, Dr. Park also completed a fellowship in Pharmacoeconomics at the University of Illinois at Chicago and earned her Doctor of Pharmacy and Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy degrees from the University of Toronto.
