JAPAN SUI COLLECTION in Kyoto

On November 14-15, 2025, the Cabinet Office of the Government of Japan organized the inaugural JAPAN SUI COLLECTION event at the stunning Kyoto State Guest House. This unique gathering aimed at showcasing the intricate beauty and rich heritage of Japan to international leaders and influencers.

The JAPAN SUI COLLECTION serves as a platform for promoting Japan’s traditional crafts, regional culinary delights, and performances, which remain largely unknown outside the country. The collection features luxury products encapsulating Japan's essence, such as renowned Wajima lacquerware, Kutani ceramics, and exquisite Hakata dolls. Approximately 60 traditional items were exhibited, which were categorized under four themes: regional heritage, modern interpretation, contemporary design, and an element of surprise, or 'wow factor.'

The Venue

The event was hosted in the Kyoto State Guest House, a structure designed to welcome dignitaries from around the world. Its unique architectural style, blending irimoya roofs with a sukya-zukuri design suitable for tea ceremonies, provided a perfect backdrop, highlighting high-level Japanese craftsmanship.

Event Highlights

The program included a variety of activities:

• - Craftsmanship Exhibition: Attendees admired the beauty of over 60 handcrafted items, leading to much praise for the refined techniques and natural materials involved.
• - Culinary Experience: Food prepared by Chef Hiroshi Nagashima included top-quality ingredients such as Yamagata wagyu beef and Oma tuna, paired with selected sake.
• - Cultural Performances: A stunning fashion show curated by JUNKO KOSHINO showcased Japanese attire, alongside traditional kyogen theatre performances, which celebrated the depth of Japan's performing arts.
• - Tea Ceremony: A tea ceremony guided by a master from the Mushakoji Senke school illustrated Japan’s diverse tea culture, with uniquely crafted utensils showcased as well as Ikebana floral arrangements and bamboo installations by Tanabe Chikuunsai IV.

The event not only captivated its attendees but also fostered an environment where fine Japanese craftsmanship could be appreciated in their intricate form.

Key Insights

Masaya Kitao, a counselor at the Cabinet Office, shared insights with journalists about the collection’s mission: to unveil Japan's regional treasures to the global community. Emphasizing the dual interpretation of ‘SUI’ as tradition and elegance, the event aims to create new value through modern interpretations while preserving original techniques.

The feedback from guests was overwhelmingly positive, highlighting the beauty and functionality of pieces like the Nishijin Ori bag and the precision of cut glass work, echoing the significance of natural materials in Japanese regional products.

This initiative heralds the groundwork for future celebrations of Japanese culture, with the next installment set for Paris in March 2026.
