Exciting New Translation and Insight of 'The Book of Tea' by Okakura Tenshin

A New Perspective on 'The Book of Tea'

On March 27, 2026, a new edition of Okakura Tenshin's renowned work, 'The Book of Tea', will be released by Two Virgins Co., Ltd., located in Chiyoda, Tokyo. This edition celebrates the 120th anniversary of the book's original publication by offering a modern translation along with insights from contemporary artist Makoto Aida.

Written in English during the Meiji era, 'The Book of Tea' quickly became a bestseller after its release in New York in 1906. The book made significant waves in Western society by introducing Eastern culture and philosophy, particularly the aesthetics surrounding the Japanese tea ceremony. While the title suggests a focus on tea, the content actually delves deeper into the broader cultural implications and philosophies of Japan and the East, presenting the concept of 'the art of living' as an antidote to the 'art of dying' espoused in Bushido — Samurais' code of ethics.

As we approach the book's 120th anniversary, it has gained renewed interest in our contemporary world, marked by a blend of multiculturalism and diversity, yet threatened by the forces of globalization and rising exclusionary sentiments. In such a context, 'The Book of Tea' is seen as a source of wisdom for recognizing personal values, inner sanctuaries, and cultural identities.

This new translation emphasizes the author’s original voice while seeking to capture the beauty and flexibility inherent in the concept of 'sado', or tea ceremony. Unlike previous translations that often leaned towards academic or nationalistic interpretations, this version aims to resonate with modern readers. Aida, a significant force in contemporary art who acknowledges Okakura's influence on his own work, provides fresh commentary aimed at contemporary audiences, proposing that the book can offer new insights and discoveries in these challenging times.

In his interpretation of the work, Aida reflects:
'I wonder if 'The Book of Tea' is like a prescription prepared in advance by Tenshin for humanity. It serves as a guide for peace — or at least for maintaining inner tranquility when peace seems unattainable. The tea ceremony, perfected by Sen no Rikyū, emerged during turbulent times marked by bloodshed. Therefore, it doesn’t seem far-fetched to interpret that Tenshin's motivation to write a book introducing the tea ceremony to the world during such a chaotic period was a reaction to the anticipated conflicts ahead.

It is essential to recognize that wars have evolved into more complex forms but remain perpetual in many parts of the world. The underlying tendencies leading to such conflicts within humanity have not changed and are deeply rooted in our nature. Given this unchanged state of worldly turmoil, revisiting 'The Book of Tea' — a text authored over a century ago, confronting Western civilization — holds profound significance. This richly metaphorical work, resonant with poetic charm, likely contains hidden hints for navigating the complex dilemmas we still face today.'
