Nikko and Komatsu Materia: Innovating Sustainability in Tableware
In a remarkable collaboration,
Nikko Co., Ltd., a ceramic manufacturer based in Ishikawa, and
Komatsu Materia Co., Ltd., a chemical materials company, have launched an innovative sustainable tableware product called "
like a Paper Cup." This dual-branded offering combines a porcelain cup that pays homage to paper cups with a high-performance fabric sleeve, offering a fresh perspective on everyday dining.
Founded in 1908, Nikko is known for its fine bone china, which embodies a durable yet lightweight nature. Their newest cup features designs inspired by local cultural elements, including the iconic Tsuzumimon gate of Kanazawa Station and traditional tea house architecture, known as "Degoshi." With four variations available, each cup is intricately finished with matte and relief techniques, delivering both elegance and quality.
To complement the cup, the sleeve is made from
KONBU®, a unique material developed by Komatsu Materia. This fabric offers a natural, dry texture with impressive strength and lightness. The sleeve's dye is sourced from plant-based materials, including discarded onion skins, reflecting a commitment to sustainability throughout the product's lifecycle.
A Thoughtful Approach to Waste Reduction
Not merely an aesthetic triumph, this collaboration aims to challenge the prevailing throwaway culture associated with paper cups. With its durable and reusable design, "like a Paper Cup" advocates for a shift towards regular use and sustainability. Each element of its design encourages consumers to reconsider habitual wastefulness.
Additionally, Nikko has implemented significant eco-friendly initiatives, such as recycling by-products from the manufacturing process into a sustainable fertilizer called
BONEARTH®. This not only minimizes waste but also promotes a circular economy, reinforcing their commitment to sustainable production.
The project's vision is rooted deeply in community values, combining the technologies and philosophies of both companies to craft high-quality items that resonate with local heritage. Nikko and Komatsu Materia share a dedication to eliminating waste, ensuring that every aspect of material, processing, and production honors the environment.
Versatile and Thoughtful Design for All
Perfectly suited as gifts or for personal use, the product's unisex design fits various lifestyles. From office settings to home environments, the cups and sleeves blend seamlessly into any decor. Available in several colors, including light gray, onion, olive, and indigo, they cater to diverse personal tastes.
The pricing ranges from
¥3,410 to ¥11,550 (with sleeves priced separately at
¥1,485 each), making this innovative tableware accessible to a broad audience. The inclusive design ensures that it can be used by anyone, whether as a gift for new job celebrations, farewells, or simple appreciation gestures.
