Experience the Uniqueness of Kinon Orchestra in Hachioji

Kinon Orchestra Vol.1: A Unique Sound Experience in Hachioji

The Kinon Orchestra, spearheaded by percussionist Tomoo Nagai, is a remarkable project that brings together sound, art, and community spirit. Based in Hachioji, this initiative has been ten years in the making, showcasing instruments crafted from local materials. In conjunction with the Hachioji Art Festival, the orchestra will host an extraordinary concert featuring unique sounds of the region.

On December 7, 2025, two segments of performances will take place at the Daichi Elementary School Gymnasium in Hachioji. The first part of the event, designed for children including toddlers, will be an engaging experience lasting approximately 45 minutes. Young attendees will have the opportunity to explore and interact with the instruments created specifically for this project. In the second segment, aimed at older audiences, the concert will last around 90 minutes, incorporating deeper themes related to the locality and its cultural context.

Thematic Focus

This year, the Kinon Orchestra will revolve around the theme of “weaving.” Concertgoers can expect to hear instruments made of drum heads stretched with silk threads and metal components sourced from local factories. This unique blend of materials symbolizes the intersection of Hachioji's industrial heritage and artistic expression, creating a soundscape that is emblematic of the region itself.

As the audiences grow, so does the orchestra. For the first time, renowned stringraphy performer Momo Suzuki and vocalist Sawori Namekawa will join forces with Nagai to enhance the experience. Suzuki’s innovative stringraphy, an original instrument conceived in Japan, connects visual art and sound, while Namekawa brings her multilingual vocal style to the stage, emphasizing the expressive nature of language through song.

Musical Collaboration

Over the years, the Kinon project has attracted many collaborators, each contributing their unique talents and perspectives. The essence of Kinon is not merely about the instruments; it is a living testament to community involvement, cultural heritage, and collective creativity. As the project evolves, it captures the diverse voices of Hachioji, turning local sounds into melodies that resonate beyond geographical borders.

Attendees can also look forward to artistic creations designed by the participating musicians during the concert, ensuring a sensory experience that engages both the mind and spirit.
