Renovation of Mikasa Hotel: A 120-Year-Old Cultural Treasure Reopens

Renovation of the Historic Mikasa Hotel in Karuizawa

The historic Mikasa Hotel, designated as an Important Cultural Asset, reopens on October 1, 2025, after an extensive renovation process that included seismic reinforcements and other significant restorative work. This much-loved structure, founded in 1906 by businessman Naoyoshi Yamamoto, showcases the grandeur of a bygone era, featuring gaslit chandeliers and British carpets that captivated many cultural figures and political leaders over the years.

After ceasing operations as a hotel in 1970, Mikasa Hotel was recognized as a major representative of modern Japanese architecture in 1980 when it was designated as an Important Cultural Asset. Since then, it has become a top tourist destination in Karuizawa, attracting about 70,000 visitors annually.

This renovation not only focused on strengthening the building's structural integrity but also aimed to create a more welcoming and comfortable atmosphere for visitors. Enhancements were made to balance functionality with the hotel's historical aesthetics. As part of the renovation, several new amenities have been introduced for the guests.

Among the new features is a rental space suited for weddings and discussions, a cozy cafe where visitors can enjoy coffee and desserts while immersed in the charm of the Meiji and Taisho periods, and a museum shop selling unique Mikasa Hotel merchandise reflecting its rich history. Additionally, a new costume rental service allows guests to don retro attire, providing a unique way to experience the hotel's cultural offerings.

Following the renovation, Hibiya Kadan, the management entity, aims to transform the Mikasa Hotel into more than just a tourism spot. By leveraging its experience in operating public facilities and promoting well-being through nature, Hibiya Kadan seeks to develop the Mikasa Hotel as a cultural exchange hub that enriches the minds and spirits of visitors.

The revitalization of the hotel stands not only as a restoration of its beautiful historical and cultural value but also as a commitment to future generations. It will continue to be a facility cherished by diverse users and work alongside the local community to ensure it meets the needs of all visitors.
