St. Luke's Heart Hospital Opens, Enhancing Cardiovascular Care in the Lehigh Valley

St. Luke's Heart Hospital: A New Era of Cardiovascular Care

On October 2, 2026, St. Luke's University Health Network celebrated the grand opening of the groundbreaking St. Luke's Heart Hospital at the St. Luke's Anderson Campus. This new facility underscores St. Luke's commitment to providing top-notch cardiovascular care to the community. Rick Anderson, St. Luke's President & CEO, emphasized the hospital's significance, stating, "The new St. Luke's Heart Hospital stands as an essential expression of what American ingenuity, innovation and determination can achieve."

The construction of the Heart Hospital represents an ambitious investment of $252 million, marking the largest project in the health network's rich 150-year history. Spanning five stories and approximately 355,000 square feet, this impressive structure will greatly enhance the healthcare landscape of the Lehigh Valley. By nearly doubling the inpatient capacity at the Anderson Campus, it will ensure the delivery of high-quality heart care to thousands of patients.

Advanced Facilities for Comprehensive Care

One of the standout features of the new Heart Hospital is its architectural and functional design, which includes a central corridor on each upper floor that extends over 100 yards. The facility is equipped with 140 beds and specializes in a broad range of cardiovascular services, all designed to provide patients with the best possible care. Notably, the hospital houses four dedicated heart operating rooms, one hybrid operating room, and ten advanced interventional suites tailored for cardiac catheterization, electrophysiology, and interventional radiology.

Dr. Raymond Durkin, Chairman of St. Luke's Cardiovascular Services, remarked, "When I look at this building, I don't just see a hospital; I see lives that will be saved, families that will have more time together, and a commitment to delivering world-class cardiovascular services close to home for generations to come.

The Heart Hospital is not just about scale; it prides itself on employing cutting-edge technology to treat cardiac conditions. The facility boasts state-of-the-art imaging equipment that aids in diagnosing complex heart diseases. Essential tools such as heart-lung machines and ECMO machines are available to ensure patients receive the highest standard of surgical and post-operative care.

A Hub for Medical Innovation

Furthermore, the Heart Hospital will function as a Siemens international show site for cardiac imaging. This designation will attract healthcare professionals from around the world to observe and learn about the innovative practices being implemented at St. Luke's. The hospital's focus on high-tech medicare is likely to contribute significantly to advancements in cardiovascular treatments on a global scale.

Despite the extensive scale and complexity of the project, it was completed at a relatively low per-square-foot cost. This achievement highlights St. Luke's extensive expertise in hospital construction, making it a leader in the healthcare sector. Over recent years, the organization has successfully built five full-service acute-care hospitals, more than any other health system in Pennsylvania.

The Future of Cardiovascular Care in the Region

Additionally, the design of the Heart Hospital includes features that enhance overall operational efficiency at the Anderson Campus. These improvements encompass a spacious new cafeteria and a strategically located rooftop helipad, facilitating quick transfers of patients to the campus's trauma center—recently awarded the highest trauma level accreditation.

Since its inception in 1872, St. Luke's University Health Network has evolved into a comprehensive, non-profit health service network, employing 24,000 professionals across 15 campuses and over 350 outpatient locations. With an annual revenue of $5 billion, it serves a vast population across 11 counties in Pennsylvania and New Jersey, further establishing its reputation as a premier teaching hospital.

The new St. Luke's Heart Hospital is not merely a brick-and-mortar establishment, but a symbol of hope and care for the community, promising to save lives and strengthen families through exceptional cardiovascular care. As we celebrate this momentous occasion, we look forward to a healthier future for all residents in the Lehigh Valley and beyond.
