An Artistic Journey Through Time at Japan Women's University
Japan Women's University's Naruse Memorial Museum is excited to host a remarkable exhibition titled
'The Campus Seen by Artists: From Taisho to Reiwa' starting September 24, 2023. This exhibition reflects on the beautiful campus landscape captured by artists since the university’s establishment in 1901.
A Historical Exploration
Over the years, several notable artists, including Yoshikazu Yanagisuke, have immortalized various architectural gems of the university. The exhibition includes stunning artworks depicting significant buildings such as the wooden
Commons established under the cherry tree line, the brick-built
Toyomekan which sadly collapsed during the Great Kanto Earthquake, and scenes from the early student housing areas. Additionally, it features the residence of Naruse Jinzō, the university’s founder, which he called home until his passing.
The artwork transports viewers to a time long gone, providing them with a rare glimpse of the campus as it once was. Visitors will also find postcards illustrated with original art from contemporary buildings like the library designed by renowned architect Kazuyo Sejima, a notable alumna of the university.
Student Involvement
An exciting aspect of this exhibition is the hands-on involvement of nine students working towards their museum studies certificates. As part of the
Museum Practice course, these students have taken the lead in developing the exhibition's concept, selecting the artwork, and creating informative captions. Their creativity in articulating insights about each piece enriches the visitor experience, allowing for a more intimate understanding of the artwork and its historical context.
