Special Exhibition of the Original Imperial Rescript

In commemoration of the anniversary of the end of World War II on August 15, the National Archives of Japan, located in Chiyoda, Tokyo, will hold a special exhibition showcasing the original Imperial Rescript on the Termination of the War. This significant event will take place from August 6 to 20, 2023. Typically, only reproductions are on display, making this a rare chance for the public to witness the actual document.

Historical Background of the Imperial Rescript

On August 15, 1945, at noon, Emperor Hirohito read the Imperial Rescript, announcing the end of the war, through a radio broadcast known as the Gyokuon-hoso (玉音放送). This moment was supported by a record of the Rescript written the day before during a cabinet meeting. During that meeting on August 14, the decision to accept the Potsdam Declaration was made. The document underwent multiple amendments, and at the same time, Sano Komonta, a senior cabinet secretary, began typing the original document to prepare it for publication.

Due to time constraints, this work commenced before the cabinet's decision was finalized, resulting in adjustments being made directly onto the original text without the usual preparatory period. This led to the unprecedented approach of physically altering the paper by cutting sections and adding text in the margins. Subsequently, that same evening, the Emperor recorded the Rescript, which was broadcast the following day.
