Building AI Optical Networks: A Catalyst for Growth in the AI Era

The AI-ON Summit took place during the MWC Shanghai 2026, with the central theme "Networks for AI, AI for Networks." This event marked a significant gathering of industry leaders, influencers, and stakeholders from various sectors to discuss the transformative potential of AI-infused optical network technologies.

The Essence of the AI-ON Summit

Held on June 26, 2026, the summit witnessed the participation of notable representatives, including officials from China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT), global telecom operators, industry partners, and Huawei. Together, they deliberated on emerging trends in optical networking amidst the burgeoning era of token monetization. The event showcased practical applications of groundbreaking services such as ultragigabit packages and 10 Gb/s integration capable of harmonizing network and computing power.

Huawei introduced ten innovative products designed for AI-Optical Networking (AI-ON), aimed at helping carriers construct fully optical networks that harness artificial intelligence while driving the widespread implementation of AI-driven services. This initiative stands to reshape how internet services are provided, marking a notable shift in the telecom landscape.

Vision for Future Optical Networks

In October of 2025, the International Telecommunication Union published its vision for ION-2030, emphasizing next-generation optical networks. Ao Li, Vice President of CAICT, elaborated on the synergistic relationship between optical networks and AI. He indicated that AI-ON will effectively support the wide-scale deployment of computational applications, leveraging large models and AI agents to evolve towards more autonomous networking.

China is currently transitioning from a phase of 'gigabit everywhere' to 'accelerating 10G', aimed at enhancing ultragigabit broadband services and exploring innovative ways to improve internet access quality. The drive towards millisecond-level computing is shifting from mere construction of systems to large-scale deployments, thereby establishing a robust, optical foundation critical for the digital economy.

Shifting Focus to Value-driven Operations

As artificial intelligence enhances the convenience for households and amplifies business productivity, leading operators such as China Mobile, China Telecom, China Unicom, Zain Jordan, and Shunwang Technology shared their latest practices related to AI capabilities. These companies are effectively enhancing residential broadband services through improved connectivity experiences, intelligent services, and proactive support. Their innovations afford households premium AI applications and broadband services, while modernization of dedicated links and integrated network-computing capabilities provides enterprises with high-quality computing access and utilization.

The advent of AI-ON signifies a value-driven shift in carrier operations, maximizing the existing user base's value, expanding value-added services, and creating sustainable growth pathways. The comprehensive modernization of Huawei's AI-ON products reflects its commitment to supporting operators in realizing their vision of fully optical AI-oriented networks.

Innovative Products Driving the Market

To capitalize on the ultragigabit service market, Huawei introduced the AI-FTTR product series, which includes AI home hubs and smart boxes, alongside FTTR Wi-Fi 7 configurations in both tri-band and dual-band formats. Pioneering the 10 Gb/s segment, Huawei has also rolled out the industry’s first high-density 50G PON service card targeting large-scale commercial deployment while upgrading the 50G PON FTTR to support tri-band Wi-Fi 7 (3+3+3).

For latency-sensitive computing tasks, Huawei presented three Mini OXC solutions, comprehensive OSU/fgOTN options, integrating OTN with Quantum Key Distribution (QKD). Innovations addressing domestic and international DCI connections revealed an only-in-industry ultra-high-capacity OTN cluster and integrated subsea-terrestrial cabling solutions. Additionally, Huawei unveiled resilience-enhancing optical network solutions such as AI DAS and 50 ms WSON, showcasing their commitment to building robust optical networks that can withstand future demand.

As the market for AI continues to expand, events like the AI-ON Summit highlight the crucial role that innovative technologies will play in shaping the future of connectivity and digital economy.
