Grand Opening of Alum Rock Health Center Marks Revitalization in East San José

Grand Opening of Alum Rock Health Center

On September 2, 2025, the new Alum Rock Health Center opened its doors in East San José, marking a significant milestone in the community's revitalization. This state-of-the-art facility is part of the larger La Avenida redevelopment project, which aims to enhance the quality of life for residents in the historically rich Mayfair neighborhood.

Strategically located at 1783 Alum Rock Ave., Suite 50, the 10,080-square-foot health center will deliver a wide array of services, including medical, dental, mental health, and chiropractic care. Importantly, it operates on a no-reject policy, meaning all individuals can access care regardless of their insurance status, financial situation, or other personal characteristics such as race, religion, or housing status. This inclusive approach to healthcare underscores the center's commitment to addressing the diverse needs of the community.

Dr. Ranjani Chandramouli, the Chief Medical Officer at Gardner Health Services, articulated the broader vision behind the center's opening. She stated, “The Alum Rock Health Center is not just a medical facility; it is a beacon of hope representing the strength and unity of the Mayfair community.” This vision is not only about providing essential healthcare but also promoting cultural pride and wellness through artistic expression and community engagement.

The establishment of this health center is fueled by a multi-million-dollar investment aimed at boosting local economic activity within the La Avenida Cultural District. This initiative reflects the community's rich heritage and commitment to support its residents. Congresswoman Zoe Lofgren played a crucial role in this endeavor, securing a $1 million federal appropriation specifically for the health center. In her remarks, she emphasized the necessity of such services, stating, “The Alum Rock Health Center will provide vital healthcare that directly meets the needs of San José residents, fostering a vibrant and resilient community for all.”

This project also received backing from numerous key stakeholders, including the School of Arts and Culture, Santa Clara County officials, and various community organizations like the Si Se Puede Collective. Santa Clara County Board Supervisor Susan Ellenberg noted that the Mayfair community has been foundational to Silicon Valley, and emphasized that this investment aims to combat health disparities and enhance access to preventative care for the population.

Gardner Health Services has a rich history dating back to its establishment in 1967, initially serving the health needs of local agricultural workers. Over the decades, the organization has grown significantly, providing comprehensive medical and mental health services to over 43,000 patients across Santa Clara and San Mateo counties, relying on an operational budget of approximately $103.5 million.

The grand opening of the Alum Rock Health Center is not just a celebration of a new facility, but a testament to the resilience of the Mayfair community and the collective efforts that enhance the social fabric of East San José. As the center begins to serve the public, it stands not just as a place of healing, but as a symbol of hope, unity, and progress for all residents in the area.
