Experience the Future of Auto Mechanics at JMS 2025

Aimed at securing and nurturing talent in the field of automotive maintenance, the Automotive Maintenance Talent Development Association will present a unique interactive booth at the Japan Mobility Show 2025 (JMS 2025). This event will take place from October 31 to November 9, 2025, at Tokyo Big Sight. The booth, titled "Challenge! Future Automotive Mechanics!", will provide children with the chance to engage with real cars and tools, immersing them in the world of auto mechanics.

Importance of Auto Mechanics in Japan

The automotive industry in Japan is a pillar of the nation's economy, employing approximately 5.58 million people, which represents about 10% of the overall workforce. Additionally, the industry's output reaches around 62.7 trillion yen, making up about 20% of the total manufacturing output. Given this significance, skilled automotive mechanics are essential for ensuring vehicles operate safely, comfortably, and in an environmentally friendly manner. Despite the necessity for this profession, the industry faces challenges such as an aging workforce and a shortage of skilled labor.

In light of these issues, the "Challenge! Future Automotive Mechanics!" booth strives to raise awareness among children and their parents about the vital role of automotive mechanics in society. By offering hands-on experiences, the initiative aims to spark interest in this field among younger generations, paving the way for future talent development.

Broader Outreach Initiatives

In addition to the experiences available at JMS 2025, numerous regional automotive maintenance experience events will be held across Japan starting in September. These events are designed to give children the chance to immerse themselves in the automotive world and appreciate the profession of automotive mechanics firsthand. Families are encouraged to participate in these local occasions to further engage with this crucial industry.

The Role of Automotive Mechanics

Automotive mechanics possess acknowledged knowledge and skills regarding vehicle structure and maintenance, certified by a national qualification. This ensures that the standard of automotive maintenance in Japan remains high. Once obtained, the qualification does not expire and does not require renewal, allowing individuals to maintain their qualifications throughout their careers while potentially advancing their skills over time.

Supporting the Future of Automotive Maintenance

The Automotive Maintenance Talent Development Association was established in 2014, consisting of various automotive industry organizations. It collaborates with the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism to promote and enhance the profession, undertaking initiatives such as career fairs and internship programs for middle and high school students.
