Recurrent Energy Launches Major 1,200 MWh Renewable Storage Facility in Arizona



On July 7, 2025, Recurrent Energy, a subsidiary of Canadian Solar Inc., proudly announced the successful commissioning of the 1,200 MWh Papago Storage facility located in Maricopa County, Arizona. Designed to meet the increasing energy demands of the summer season, this facility is now actively supplying stored energy to Arizona Public Service (APS), the largest electric utility in the state.

The Papago Storage facility is part of a broader initiative comprising three projects in partnership with APS, collectively capable of delivering 1,800 MWh of battery storage and integrating 150 MWac of solar power. Once all projects are operational, they will provide enough electrical capacity to power 72,000 homes for four hours, alongside solar generation sufficient to supply approximately 24,000 homes with energy for a year.

Derek Seaman, the Director of Resource Acquisition at APS, emphasized the facility's importance, stating, "Summer is here, and we are ready to serve APS customers with the energy they need when they need it. The Papago Storage project is part of our diverse and balanced energy mix, helping us continue to provide Arizona with top-tier reliability and affordable service."

In comments reflecting on the project, Kevin Thompson, Chair of the Arizona Corporation Commission, praised Recurrent Energy for completing one of Arizona’s largest energy storage projects. He noted, "Bringing online this significant facility during a time of increasing energy demand will assist utilities in adapting to these changes and diversifying Arizona's energy resources."

Moreover, Arizona House Majority Leader Michael Carbone acknowledged the impact of the project on state growth and energy needs, remarking, "I congratulate Recurrent Energy on this remarkable achievement. Arizona's favorable economy necessitates robust energy solutions to support its rapid development. The Papago Storage Project is integral to our energy future."

Not only does the Papago Storage project bolster grid reliability, but it also offers tangible benefits to the local community through enhanced tax revenues and direct support under Recurrent Energy's Community CaRE (Community and Renewable Energy) Program. Noteworthy contributions include donations to the Harquahala Fire District and Arlington Elementary School in Maricopa County.

The project was executed with the assistance of e-STORAGE, a majority-owned subsidiary of Canadian Solar, which managed the engineering, procurement, and construction processes, and will maintain operations under a long-term service agreement.

Ismael Guerrero, CEO of Recurrent Energy, remarked on the collaborative efforts with APS, stating, "The commissioning of the Papago Storage facility marks a pivotal milestone in our partnership, as we enhance Arizona's energy infrastructure. We are dedicated to delivering flexible capacity to meet the growing energy demands of the state while delivering value to both the community and our partners."
