Experience the Rich Tradition of Strawberry Picking in Shizuoka: A Sustainable Delight

The Rich Tradition of Strawberry Picking in Shizuoka

Shizuoka City, a region boasting a 130-year history as the birthplace of strawberry cultivation, introduces a unique experience in the Kuno area along the Kuno Highway and Strawberry Coast Road. Starting from mid-January, visitors can enjoy picking "Ishigaki strawberries" at over 20 strawberry farms scattered across this picturesque area, which stretches alongside Suruga Bay. This eco-friendly farming method allows for sustainable cultivation without the need for heating houses, thanks to the warmth retained in the stone walls that support the strawberry plants.

What are Ishigaki Strawberries?

The unique growing technique for Ishigaki strawberries involves planting seedlings between stone walls, utilizing the radiant heat from these structures. This method not only conserves energy by negating the need for fuel-powered heating but also promotes a rich, flavorful fruit thanks to optimal sunlight exposure along the coast. The harvested strawberries are celebrated for their sweetness and quality, thanks to the natural climate of the Kuno region.

A Brief History of Ishigaki Strawberry Cultivation

The origins of strawberry cultivation in the Kuno area trace back to about 130 years ago, specifically in 1896, when a priest at the Kunozan Toshogu Shrine received strawberry seedlings from an individual at the American consulate. He entrusted them to a local farmer, who planted them using this innovative method amongst the stones. The resultant crop thrived due to the warm climate and thermal insulation provided by the stones, setting a precedent that continues today.

Sustainable Practices Since the Meiji Era

The ideal temperature for strawberry cultivation is approximately 10°C at night and around 23°C during the day for efficient photosynthesis. Typically, farmers rely on heaters and CO2 enrichment to optimize growth conditions. Yet, the Ishigaki method optimally utilizes the favorable weather and sun exposure of the Kuno region. The concrete walls store solar energy, allowing strawberries to thrive without artificial heating, making this method both environmentally friendly and sustainable, adhering to traditions since the Meiji period.

Best Time for Strawberry Picking and Tips

The best time for picking strawberries is during the morning hours of January and February when the berries are at their freshest. Look for vibrant strawberries with a bright color, and test their ripeness by checking if the calyx is curved. For picking, gently bend the stem while twisting to remove the berry cleanly. Enjoying the tip of the strawberry first is recommended for the sweetest experience.

Events Celebrating Strawberries in Shizuoka

In addition to strawberry picking, Shizuoka City hosts various strawberry-themed events. One notable event is the "Shizuoka Strawberry Fair 2026" at the Shimizu Espalux Dream Plaza, featuring limited-edition sweets and beverages from January 31 to March 31. Activities include:
1. Strawberry & Chocolate Afternoon Tea: Indulge in a luxurious afternoon tea experience featuring strawberries and chocolate.
2. Strawberry Sushi: Taste the innovative strawberry inari sushi at local locations that merge flavors uniquely.
3. Strawberry Daifuku: Sample handcrafted mochi filled with strawberries from traditional local wagashi shops.

Additionally, visitors can participate in workshops like creating their personalized strawberry parfaits at various spots, ensuring everyone can enjoy the sweet delights of this beloved fruit.

As visitors pick their strawberries and indulge in local delicacies, they not only savor the delicious fruits but also partake in a tradition steeped in innovation and sustainability that captures the essence of Shizuoka.
