Diesel Direct, the leading provider of mobile fueling solutions in the United States, is thrilled to announce its support for the Steamship Authority’s progressive renewable diesel pilot program. This initiative will commence aboard the M/V Island Home ferry during the summer months and represents a significant advancement in sustainable transportation within New England.
The pilot program is set to take place from June 1 to September 1, 2025, and will utilize R99 renewable diesel—an innovative biofuel made from sustainable biomass. This is a landmark moment, as it denotes the first use of R99 renewable diesel in marine operations on the East Coast. This program aims to achieve a substantial reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, estimated at a minimum of 50%, and potentially reaching up to 78% when contrasted with standard ultra-low-sulfur diesel.
As a drop-in fuel, R99 is chemically identical to conventional diesel, which means the operating engines of the ferry will not require any alterations. While similar initiatives have been prevalent on the West Coast, this pilot is a pioneering effort to enhance the accessibility of renewable diesel on the eastern seaboard.
The Steamship Authority’s General Manager, Robert B. Davis, expressed optimism regarding the venture, stating, "This reduction in greenhouse gas emissions will be significant to our operations and our port communities. We’re excited to be at the forefront of testing R99’s use in New England." The initiative was unanimously approved by the Board and Port Council of the Steamship Authority during their joint session on May 15. If successful, there are intentions to explore converting the entire fleet of ten ferries to renewable diesel, thereby expanding the program's impact.
