Hong Kong University to Launch New Medical School with Support from Local Government
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) is set to establish a new medical school, marking a significant milestone in the region's educational landscape. Supported by the HKSAR Government, this initiative aims to foster a new generation of doctors equipped with both clinical excellence and technological proficiency.
This new medical school, which will be Hong Kong's third, aligns with the city's strategic vision to enhance its healthcare system and become a prominent international hub for medical training, research, and innovation. Prof. Harry Shum, Chairman of the HKUST Council, expressed his gratitude to the HKSAR Government and emphasized the need for this development in light of evolving healthcare demands in Hong Kong.
With the launch slated for an inaugural cohort in 2028, HKUST plans to train students through an interdisciplinary approach that integrates engineering with medicine. This approach aims to cultivate not only medical knowledge but also a strong sense of ethics, empathy, and patient-centered care. Prof. Nancy Ip, the university president, reiterated the government's support in establishing an educational environment conducive to world-class research and training while fostering deep connections with the local and international medical communities.
In terms of structure, the initial program will offer a four-year graduate-entry Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree, targeting candidates with a strong background in science or healthcare from recognized institutions. The curriculum is designed to meet both local healthcare needs and global standards, ensuring graduates are well-equipped for professional practice. The focus will also be on creating a diverse faculty that brings a wealth of experience to the program, enhancing both teaching and research capabilities.
To bolster its global position, HKUST has already begun forming partnerships with around 40 esteemed medical institutions across Asia, Europe, and North America to facilitate curriculum development and joint research endeavors. These partnerships are crucial for a comprehensive medical education that adapts to rapid advancements in technology and medicine.
Additionally, HKUST's exceptional academic reputation, particularly in data science and artificial intelligence—ranking first in Hong Kong and 17th globally—will play a critical role in shaping the training of future healthcare professionals. Emphasis will be placed on understanding technology’s capabilities and limitations, ensuring graduates can effectively apply these tools in clinical settings.
In terms of funding, the university maintains a solid financial base and plans to allocate approximately HK$7 billion over 25 years toward the medical school. This investment demonstrates HKUST's long-term commitment to enhancing local healthcare through education and research. The HKSAR Government has also committed recurrent funding to support the academic programs while contributing to the construction of the medical facilities that will be established in the Ngau Tam Mei New Development Area.
