Cyber KASSEN: A New Era of Digital Sports in Education
In an exciting shift toward modern sports, Fukuoka's Yahata High School recently embraced the future with the introduction of the digital sport,
Cyber KASSEN. The event, held on March 16, 2026, gathered around
280 students from the first and second years for an unprecedented class match experience, gaining significant attention as a viable indoor sport.
The initiative was organized by the
Japan Kassen Association, led by president Takuma Motomura, who is also an alumnus of Yahata High. This special event was particularly meaningful as it marked a return to his alma mater, highlighting the school’s dedication to innovative educational experiences. This was a follow-up to the successful Cyber KASSEN experience during a science and math field trip in August 2025, reinforcing the students' eagerness for more.
On the day of the event, representatives from each class participated in competitive team matches. The excitement was palpable as spectators cheered for their classmates, turning the gymnasium into a hub of energy and teamwork. Remarkably, even the teachers joined in the fun, with the principal participating directly in the matches, showcasing a united front of competition and camaraderie between faculty and students.
Cyber KASSEN utilizes sensors and a dedicated application for automatic scoring, enabling safe and strategic multi-player competitions. With recent climate rises necessitating more indoor activities, this sport has emerged as a safe alternative for summer engagements, thus meeting a growing demand.
The carefully designed structure ensured that students experienced substantial physical activity in a secure environment. The overwhelmingly positive responses from participants included remarks like, “It was so much fun!” and, “I want to play again!” Students expressed their desire to see Cyber KASSEN included in future curricular activities, indicating its effectiveness in fostering cooperation and decision-making skills among youth.
Teacher's Perspective
One teacher noted, “Following our previous field trip, many students expressed their wish to play again. Introducing it as a class match heightened the sense of unity and their enthusiasm exceeded all expectations. Importantly, all students, including those less skilled in sports, could participate, showing immense potential for future school events.”
Additionally, a recording of the day’s activities has been made available on the official YouTube channel, allowing others to appreciate the excitement firsthand.
The Japan Kassen Association is committed to continuing the integration of
ICT in education alongside physical activities, aiming to expand the reach of Cyber KASSEN across the nation.
