Record-Breaking Success in the Advanced Sommelier Examination

On July 17, 2025, the Court of Master Sommeliers, Americas made headlines by announcing the results of the largest Advanced Sommelier Practical and Tasting Examination in its history. A remarkable 87 candidates from the United States, Canada, and Mexico participated in this demanding test, achieving a 63% pass rate. This means that 55 candidates successfully earned their Advanced Sommelier certification, representing both the highest number of test takers and the largest passing class recorded by the organization.

A total of 19 women and 9 candidates for whom English is a second language took on the challenges of this rigorous examination process. Their achievements contribute to a vital and growing community of Advanced Sommeliers, now totaling nearly 900 members across the Americas.

Each will be awarded a scholarship that covers the fees to the Master Sommelier Theory examination, an essential step on their journey toward attaining the prestigious Master Sommelier title.

Christopher Dugan, who achieved the highest score among the candidates, stated, “This is the culmination of years of study and sacrifice, and represents the most challenging and rewarding achievement of my career. After not passing in 2023, this moment feels especially meaningful – a reminder of what great things you can accomplish if you persevere.” His determination serves as an inspiration to aspiring sommeliers across the continent.

Accessibility Improvements: In 2022, the organization made significant adjustments to the Advanced Sommelier Exam, allowing for the Theory component to be hosted at local testing centers nationwide. This increased access ensures that all qualified candidates, regardless of location, can participate in the examinations. Furthermore, the prerequisites for the Advanced Sommelier Course were expanded, reducing barriers for prospective candidates.

Comprehensive Support for Candidates: To enhance preparation, the Court actively provided detailed examination standards and organized sessions to inform candidates about what to expect during the examination process. Moreover, a new mentoring program was introduced, which connects candidates with Master Sommeliers, offering invaluable guidance regardless of geographic constraints.

In addition, Julie Cohen Theobald was hired as Executive Director, bringing extensive leadership experience from the nonprofit and corporate sectors.

Ethics and Professional Standards: The introduction of the Candidate Bill of Rights demonstrates a commitment to ethical standards, while an anonymous Ethics Reporting Line reinforces the organization's commitment to integrity and fosters a supportive environment for candidates.
