Ohio State University and Columbus State Community College Triumph in the Battery Workforce Challenge



In a remarkable achievement, the collaborative team from Ohio State University and Columbus State Community College has secured the top prize in the prestigious Battery Workforce Challenge, concluding a three-year engineering competition that featured 11 teams from across North America. This event, which is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and Stellantis, focused on challenging students to design and create an advanced battery pack specifically for the commercial Ram ProMaster EV platform.

The Battery Workforce Challenge is designed to bridge the gap between education and the real-world applications present in the automotive and energy sectors. Over the capacity of three years, participants embarked on a journey that involved hands-on experience in various aspects of battery design, safety, validation, and vehicle integration. This process permitted students to engage with contemporary industry challenges and allowed them to foster practical skills that set them apart in the job market.

During the competition, each year required teams to progress through increasingly complex technical milestones. In the inaugural year, participants established their architectural strategies, which laid the groundwork for subsequent design decisions. The second year revolved around assessing various design trade-offs, ensuring practicality and performance against safety standards. Finally, in the third year, they focused on packaging trade-offs, honing their designs, and strategizing manufacturing logistics.

The judges awarded the top prize to the Ohio State University and Columbus State Community College team, commending their extraordinary project management, cohesiveness, and efficiency throughout the program. Their comprehensive planning and successful execution of each phase showcased the high level of talent and commitment that characterized their participation.

Micky Bly, Senior Vice President of Global Propulsion Systems Engineering at Stellantis N.V., highlighted the challenges students encountered during the competition as critical to simulating the realities of the mobility industry. He stated, “The students working in the Battery Workforce Challenge have faced the same technical and commercial decisions as professionals in the sector. This hands-on experience in problem-solving and teamwork will be invaluable as they progress in their careers.”
