University of Phoenix Unveils AI Literacy Framework at AAC&U Conference for Higher Education

Presentation on AI Literacy Framework at AAC&U Conference

The recent AAC&U Conference on AI and Higher Education, held from October 28-30 in Atlanta, Georgia, featured a significant presentation by Dr. Susan Hadley, Associate Dean of the College of General Studies at the University of Phoenix. Her talk focused on the implementation of the AI Literacy Framework developed by the Digital Education Council, a framework aimed at enriching the integration of AI skills into academic environments.

This exciting discussion brought together leaders from four diverse institutions, including the University of Boise State, Johns Hopkins University, and the Medical University of South Carolina, all of which have been active participants in AACU’s Institute on AI, Pedagogy, and the Curriculum. The panel titled, “One Framework, Four Missions Implementing the Digital Education Council's AI Literacy Framework Across Diverse Institutions,” provided insights into how these institutions have approached the incorporation of AI literacy across their educational programs.

Collaborative Effort in Implementing AI Literacy

During her portion of the presentation, Dr. Hadley emphasized the collaborative nature of their work. By sharing the experiences and strategies employed by each institution, the panel aimed to shed light on how collaborative endeavors can enhance the adoption of AI literacy in higher education. It became evident that cross-institution partnerships could significantly bolster the effectiveness of educational frameworks that aim to prepare students for a future increasingly dominated by AI.

Dr. Hadley's contributions to this initiative stem from her involvement with the AACU’s Institute, where she has championed AI skills integration as a crucial component of the University of Phoenix's educational approach. She highlighted that the University started integrating foundational AI literacy skills into its Phoenix Success Series, which served as a springboard for broader institutional initiatives aimed at embedding AI competencies across various programs and courses.

An Institutional Approach to AI Integration

The University of Phoenix has adopted a holistic strategy regarding the infusion of AI into its curriculum, extending beyond just academic content into student support and institutional operations. This comprehensive approach allows working adult learners to develop practical skills in AI that are aligned with the evolving demands of the workforce. As part of its academic AI framework, the University is not only embedding AI skills into its programs but also expanding AI-enabled learning resources to enhance student experiences.

Dr. Hadley's presentation adeptly conveyed the lessons learned through their journey and outlined possible next steps for the University as it continues to prioritize AI literacy in student learning experiences. She stated, “This presentation offers an excellent opportunity to share our approach, insights, and future directions as we integrate AI literacy intentionally across the learning landscape.”
