Special Open House at Nagao Residence
The traditional Nagao Residence, a designated tangible cultural asset of Kyoto City, will open its doors to the public during the Gion Festival from July 14 to 16, 2026. This rare opportunity allows visitors to explore approximately 30 exquisite items, including historical screens and hanging scrolls, all while gaining insights into Kyoto's rich cultural heritage through guided explanations by students from Ritsumeikan University.
About Nagao Residence
Nagao Residence exemplifies the classic architectural style of a Kyoto machiya, seamlessly blending home and workplace. Designated as a tangible cultural asset of Kyoto City in April 2005, this property features six structures: the main north wing, main south wing, decorated rooms, a separate house, and two storehouses. Access to the residence is generally restricted for preservation purposes, yet it is temporarily accessible during the Gion Festival, coinciding with the traditional
Byobu Matsuri held by Ritsumeikan University.
In 2025, over 1,100 visitors flocked to the residence for the exhibition, which highlighted the essence of Kyoto's traditional culture through approximately 40 items, including screens, hanging scrolls, and cultural artifacts from the Showa era.
What is Byobu Matsuri?
Byobu Matsuri is a cherished tradition during the Gion Festival's Yoiyama period, whereby historic homes and establishments in the Yamaboko districts welcome guests with their stored treasures, including beautiful screens and decorative art. Annually, around 20 locations participate, showcasing items passed down through generations, allowing visitors to experience traditional culture firsthand.
Partnership Between Industry and Academia
Ritsumeikan University holds the collection while the real estate developer, Hoosiers Holdings Inc., owns the land and buildings. The two parties have signed an agreement to ensure proper preservation and management of the Nagao Residence and collaborate on events such as Byobu Matsuri. Associate Professor Hirotaka Sato from the newly established Design and Art Faculty of Ritsumeikan University provides valuable expertise in the exhibition's configuration and educational content.
Student Involvement
The university also offers a course to assist in the planning and execution of Byobu Matsuri, allowing sophomore students and graduate students to participate in creating exhibition panels and conducting on-site explanations.

Exhibition Goals and Highlights
This year’s theme emphasizes the omnipresence of flora and fauna motifs throughout the Gion Matsuri's decorations, symbolizing longevity and prosperity. These designs not only delight the viewers but also enrich the festive atmosphere. They bridge the spiritual significance of the festival with its artistic expressions, embodying Kyoto's deep respect for nature.
