Dr. Judy Benjamin's Journey: Advocating for Alzheimer's Awareness in England

At the age of 82, Dr. Judy Benjamin has completed an incredible 550-mile walk from Land's End to London, making her way through the heart of southern England. Having embarked on this journey on August 1, she has taken approximately 1.3 million steps, culminating her efforts on September 25 as she arrived at Lambeth Bridge.

Dr. Benjamin, a survivor of Alzheimer’s disease, undertook this monumental trek not just for personal achievement but to share her inspirational story and raise awareness for families affected by this devastating illness. Her aim is to encourage early conversations regarding cognitive health, emphasizing the critical importance of recognizing symptoms and seeking help promptly.

In her quest, Dr. Benjamin also established the Alzheimer's Survivors Foundation, an initiative designed to gather and share experiences from others who have successfully reversed or improved their symptoms. The route taken by Dr. Benjamin crossed charming communities and historical landmarks, including Brighton, the iconic White Cliffs of Dover, and the historic city of Canterbury where she has personal ancestral ties dating back to the 1600s.

Reflecting on her completion of the journey, she expressed, "Reaching London means a lot to me, but the treasured conversations I had along the way are what I will carry with me forever. People opened up about their lives, sharing the impact of Alzheimer's on their loved ones, and it was profoundly meaningful to connect and share my journey with them. I hope this walk encourages more people to inquire about their brain health and take early action." Her experience resonates with many who have witnessed the effects of Alzheimer's on family members or friends.

Dr. Benjamin's fight against Alzheimer’s began when she was diagnosed at 67, a grim realization especially as she watched the disease affect her mother and several uncles. Through a personalized health regime guided by neurologist Dr. Dale Bredesen, she focused on lifestyle changes and nutrition that could contribute to her mental well-being. The results have been positive; she reports experiencing cognitive improvements and currently works as a health and wellness coach, motivating others with her story.

Her visit to Canterbury was particularly emotional for her, as she stopped at the same church where her ancestors' significant life events were recorded. This validation added depth to her mission, marking the journey not just as a physical challenge but a pilgrimage of sorts to reconnect with her roots.

As part of her walk, Dr. Benjamin visited Linden Care Home in Lymington, where she engaged with residents and caregivers to foster discussions around Alzheimer's, offering them hope and encouragement through her personal narrative of recovery. The journey across the UK follows her previous walk in 2025 across the United States, where she trekked an astonishing 2,870 miles from San Diego, California, to St. Augustine, Florida.

Though her UK journey has concluded, Dr. Benjamin is not slowing down. She plans to continue her advocacy work, focusing on brain health coaching, reaching out to families, and raising awareness of the importance of early intervention for cognitive health issues.
