Okayama University Showcases Science Fun at the 3rd Zaidan Science Festival

On December 13, 2025, Okayama University, located in Okayama City, participated in the 3rd Zaidan Science Festival held at Zaidan Elementary School. Organized as part of an initiative by Chugoku Bank's East Okayama branch to promote the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), this event marked its third year, bringing science closer to the children of the local community.

The festival featured a two-part program titled 'Antarctica Class,' which included lectures and interactive science experiments. Attendees were treated to a presentation by a former Antarctic research team member, followed by hands-on scientific activities, including robot soccer facilitated by students from Okayama Prefectural Higashi Okayama Technical High School.

The General Technical Department of Okayama University presented four themes: 'Creating Kaleidoscopes from Pet Bottles,' 'Making Bookmarks with Chromatography Art,' 'Crafting Bath Bombs,' and 'Making Chilly Slime.' Eighteen young participants enthusiastically rotated through the various activities, gaining first-hand experience in the wonders of science. Additionally, seven students from Okayama Prefectural Okayama Joto High School volunteered to support the hands-on experiments, ensuring that all safety procedures were followed and assisting the younger attendees in their scientific pursuits.

The day was marked by bright smiles and excitement, as the children engaged with their friends, working collaboratively on the projects while being captivated by the world of science. Masahiro Narasaki, the head of the General Technical Department's Medical Technology Section, commented on the enthusiasm displayed by the children, saying, 'Their eyes were sparkling with curiosity, and they genuinely seemed to enjoy the activities. I hope this experience ignites a passion for science that they carry into the future.'

Nobuhito Sato, the Vice President, who oversees research and industry-academia collaboration, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to participate once again this year. He stated, 'The collaboration with high school students not only enhances our technical staff's skills but is also vital for nurturing future talent. We want to continue contributing to society through various activities.'
