Metacon Secures EU Funding for Advanced Green Hydrogen Production from Biogas
In a significant advancement towards sustainable energy, Metacon, through its Greek subsidiary Metacon SA, has been awarded EU funding for its involvement in the PUREHY2+ project. This initiative is focused on developing an integrated solution for producing high-purity green hydrogen from biogas, while simultaneously capturing carbon dioxide produced during the process. The EU grant covers EUR 188,018 of the project, reinforcing the partnership aimed at fostering innovative energy solutions.
Biogas production is already a prevalent practice across numerous sites in Europe, generating renewable energy from organic waste. The PUREHY2+ project aims to refine this biogas into high-purity hydrogen, adding value to existing biogas plants by providing an additional high-demand product. The technology developed through this project is designed to achieve hydrogen purity levels exceeding 99.97%, establishing a benchmark for quality in the market and showcasing the capabilities of Metacon's proprietary reforming technology.
The total budget for the PUREHY2+ project is EUR 1,626,622, with a projected timeline of three years. Metacon's specific budget within the project is EUR 235,022, which is supplemented by the public funding representing 80% of the total. This level of support signifies the EU’s commitment to enhancing renewable energy solutions and aligns with broader sustainability goals.
One of the standout features of this initiative is its potential to create a decentralized hydrogen production system that leverages existing biogas infrastructure without necessitating extensive new electricity-intensive facilities. This approach not only maximizes the use of locally sourced renewable energy but also contributes to reducing carbon footprints by capturing greenhouse gases effectively.
The project is built on the foundations of the earlier PUREHY project, during which the consortium successfully evaluated Greece’s first semi-pilot production unit for extracting and purifying hydrogen from biogas. PUREHY2+ aspires to elevate the work done previously, advancing towards more adaptable and efficient solutions for biogas producers.
Christer Wikner, the President and CEO of Metacon, elaborated on the potential impact of this project, stating, "Biogas plants are already optimal for handling renewable feedstock and have the necessary production infrastructure in place. We recognize tremendous opportunities in how these resources can also serve as platforms for generating high-purity green hydrogen alongside capturing carbon dioxide emissions. This project is pivotal for us to evolve our technology further and create a robust enabling system for the renewable hydrogen market."
The PUREHY2+ project will be collaborating with various esteemed partners, including research institutions NCSR Demokritos and CERTH/CPERI, alongside biogas producers such as BIOGAS LAGKADA. The research aims to explore two primary routes for hydrogen production: biomethane reforming and dark fermentation using cyanobacteria. Further advancements will involve creating hybrid membrane and sorbent systems that enhance gas purification and carbon capture.
The expected outcome from PUREHY2+ is not just the production of hydrogen but also meeting stringent fuel cell-grade hydrogen quality standards, thereby establishing a new resource efficiency paradigm in renewable energy systems. This project will also pave the way for broader participation in the hydrogen economy, highlighting how traditional biogas systems can evolve.
In light of the growing emphasis on renewable energy technologies, METACON’s efforts underscore a crucial shift towards integrating more sustainable practices at existing biogas plants. The funding from the European Union will enable technological enhancements that not only promote sustainability but also adhere to the rigorous demands of modern energy markets. The result will be a responsible adaptation of existing systems toward the inevitable transition into more extensive hydrogen production capabilities, significantly contributing to a greener future.
