Pearson Expands Leadership to Boost AI and Tech

In a significant move that underscores its commitment to technological innovation, Pearson has announced a newly expanded role for its Chief Technology Officer, Dave Treat. As the world's leading lifelong learning company, Pearson is looking to further develop its capabilities in artificial intelligence (AI) and digital technology. Beginning on April 7, Treat will take on additional leadership of the company's digital and technology operations, while continuing his current architectural and innovation responsibilities.

After joining Pearson only nine months ago, Treat has already made a notable impact. He has been instrumental in establishing the company's AI Center of Enablement and has overseen various key initiatives within the Research and Development sectors. With nearly three decades of experience in technology innovation, Treat brings a wealth of knowledge regarding generative AI, Web 3, spatial computing, and quantum technologies. His impressive background includes previous senior positions at industry giants like Deloitte, UBS Investment Bank, and Accenture, and he holds over 100 patents spanning distributed ledger technology, digital identity solutions, and confidential computing.

Marykay Wells, who has successfully led Pearson's Digital and Technology team as the Chief Information Officer, is stepping down, effective April 4. Her tenure has been marked by strategic advancements, particularly in the automation of processes and improving customer experiences by leveraging innovative technologies, including generative AI. Wells's leadership has played a crucial role in transitioning Pearson from print-based operations to a more digital-centric model, enabling the enrichment of learning experiences.

Commenting on the changes, Pearson’s CEO, Omar Abbosh, expressed deep gratitude for Mary's contributions, highlighting how her strategic guidance has facilitated the company’s technological transformation. He emphasized that Treat’s innovative leadership will not only enhance Pearson's growth trajectory but also inspire the team to develop groundbreaking solutions that can redefine learning’s future.

Treat himself conveyed enthusiasm for his new responsibilities, recognizing the pivotal role technology plays in revolutionizing education. He noted the tremendous achievements made by Wells and the digital team, and he looks forward to building upon their success to further leverage technology to empower learners around the globe.

As Pearson progresses into this new phase, the focus will be on using its robust technology framework to expand AI offerings, strengthen innovation pathways, and facilitate collaboration across various business segments. The move highlights Pearson's strategic direction in harnessing technology for educational benefits, setting the stage for new advancements that are highly relevant in our rapidly changing world.

Pearson operates in nearly 200 countries and remains steadfast in its mission to create impactful learning experiences, harnessing the power of technology to support personal and professional growth for individuals. With Treat at the helm, the company aims to navigate the challenges and opportunities presented by the evolving education landscape.

Looking ahead, the potential for AI and digital technologies to enhance educational outcomes seems limitless, and under Treat’s guidance, Pearson is well-positioned to lead the charge in this exciting new domain. As we anticipate the innovations that will emerge, learners and educators alike can look forward to transformative tools and resources designed to realize the potential of every individual through the power of learning.
