Seminar on Plastic Recycling and Chemical Recycling Trends
Event Title: International Trends in Plastic Recycling and Chemical Recycling: Japan’s Technological Developments and Challenges
Date and Time: July 11, 2025, from 4:30 PM to 6:30 PM (JST)
Speaker: Professor Masahiko Matsukata, Waseda University
The Japan Planning Institute (JPI) is excited to host a seminar featuring Professor Masahiko Matsukata, a leading expert in applied chemistry. The seminar will delve into the pressing topic of plastic recycling, highlighting the international trends in plastic and chemical recycling, as well as Japan’s technological advancements and ongoing challenges exhibited through NEDO's achievements.
Background on the Topic
The necessity for effective plastic recycling is becoming increasingly critical in our global push for a circular economy. Parallel to metal recycling, the quest for advanced plastic recycling methods is urgent. Japan aims for zero simple incineration and landfilling of plastics by 2035. Currently, approximately 8 million tons of plastic waste is not recycled, with polyolefins—polyethylene, polypropylene, and polystyrene—accounting for about 70% of that waste. Beyond these, various recycling technologies, including PET recycling, are essential solutions being explored.
Seminar Overview
During the seminar, Professor Matsukata will especially focus on the advances in chemical recycling technologies. Participants will explore:
1.
