On the afternoon of May 2, the Franklin County Visitors Bureau will host a delightful tea event to celebrate the legacy of Harriet Rebecca Lane, born in Mercersburg, Pennsylvania on May 9, 1803. Harriet Lane is historically significant as the niece of President James Buchanan and the First Lady of the United States during his presidency from 1857 to 1861. Each year, this event commemorates her contributions as the First Lady of Franklin County, reinforcing her enduring impact on the community.

Event Details


The tea gathering will commence at noon, taking place in the Great Room on the second floor of the Franklin County 11/30 Visitors Center, a charming venue perfect for such a traditional social gathering. The ticket price is set at $38 per person, which includes a beautifully crafted take-home tea cup along with a selection of exotic teas to take home.

This year’s program is particularly thrilling, as attendees will explore the artistry of floral arrangements, embracing the beauty of flowers that were so loved in Harriet's time. Guests will learn how to infuse a Victorian flair into their flower arrangements and how to accentuate their attire with floral accessories, just as Harriet Lane elegantly did.

In the spirit of Harriet Lane’s era, wearing hats is not only encouraged but also celebrated at this event. Guests are invited to don their favorite hats, whether an old treasure or a newly crafted one, to honor the style of the 19th century. A friendly competition will take place with awards for the Most Elegant Hat, Most Springtime Inspiration, and the jury’s special award, Harriet’s Pick – highlighting creativity and style.

The mid-afternoon tea will feature a delightful assortment of delicacies, including cucumber sandwiches, summer sandwiches, cookies, and strawberry tarts, alongside milk bread.
