As we navigate the complexities of travel in the era of heightened security, planning is more vital than ever, especially for US citizens eager to travel in 2025. Motivation Excellence, a leading performance improvement agency known for its expertise in group travel incentives and corporate meetings, has compiled crucial updates regarding new travel regulations.
REAL ID Requirement
Starting on
May 7, 2025, US residents must present a
REAL ID-compliant identification or a valid passport for domestic air travel. This requirement stems from the 2005 legislation aimed at enhancing security following the tragic events of September 11. The updated identification needs are part of the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) final rule which mandates that even if you are traveling within the United States, you will not be allowed to proceed through security without compliance.
A REAL ID can be identified by a star in the upper right corner of the ID card, which may be either in color or black and white. Joe Reise, Director of Travel Purchasing, Planning, and Supplier Relations at Motivation Excellence, emphasizes the urgency for travelers: “If your state ID does not have this star, you will need to secure a REAL ID or alternative documentation well in advance of May 7, 2025.” To obtain a REAL ID, individuals must provide documentation, such as proof of identity, Social Security number, and residency. Visit
usa.gov/real-id to find out specific steps for your state.
Additionally, federal facilities, including military bases, will also require REAL ID after this date. So, if you’re planning to visit any secure locations, ensure your identification is up to standards.
Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) for the UK
For American citizens intending to visit or transit through the
UK, it is now mandatory to apply for an
Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) before embarking. This rule applies not only to direct flights into the UK but also for layovers.
“The application process for the ETA can take up to
72 hours, so it's essential to factor this into your travel planning, ideally a week before departure,” advises Reise. Applicants can quickly complete this process via the official UK ETA mobile application, available for both iOS and Android devices. The application process requires your active passport, an email account, and a digital payment method.
ETIAS for European Travel
Looking beyond the UK, travelers should also prepare for the
European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS), slated for implementation in 2025. While the exact date of ETIAS' operational launch remains uncertain due to its link with the
Entry/Exit System (EES), US travelers need to be cognizant of these requirements as they finalize plans for visiting European countries.
As Reise points out, it’s prudent to frequently check the
U.S. Department of State’s website for the latest updates regarding international travel obligations. This will ensure that travelers are not caught off guard by any last-minute changes to entry requirements.
